Cal State Fullerton (10-10) at Long Beach State (10-11)

GAME NOTES: Two of the three teams tied for fourth place in the Big West Conference clash at the Walter Pyramid tonight as the Long Beach State 49ers entertain the Cal State Fullerton Titans.

The Titans enter this meeting with a two-game win streak thanks to a 74-68 victory against UC Irvine on Saturday. The two games prior to that were also relatively close, given that both went to overtime, which means the last five games have all been close calls for Fullerton and that has left the squad at 4-4 in conference play.

Coming in with a similar story, the Beach had also won two in a row and is now 4-4 in league action. Saturday evening provided the squad with an 80-58 blowout win against UC Davis, just two days after surviving a 69-68 meeting with Cal State Northridge on the road.

The 49ers lead the all-time series with Fullerton by a count of 58-40, even though it was the Titans who won the first meeting of the season last month by a score of 85-75 at home.

Bryce Webster and Jer'Vaughn Johnson were questionable for the meeting with UC Irvine over the weekend as the former suffered from the effects of food poisoning and the latter injured his shoulder in Friday's practice, but both showed up for the Titans in the six-point win. Johnson was one of four to score in double figures as he tallied 15 points and cleared eight rebounds, while Orane Chin delivered a season-high 23 points and eight boards. Devon Peltier posted 15 points and Jacques Streeter 11 for the home team. The effort by Chin marked the third time in the last four games that he's scored in double figures, something he had done just four times in the previous 16 contests. In terms of overall scoring on the season, Johnson leads the pack with his 11.4 ppg, but Aaron Thompson is close behind with 11.2 ppg stemming from his sizzling 50.8 percent shooting out on the perimeter.

LBSU used strong second-half defense to put some distance between itself and UC Davis on Saturday, holding the Aggies to a mere eight field goals after the break. Eugene Phelps delivered a team-best 21 points and cleared nine rebounds, his efforts on the glass second only to T.J. Robinson who recorded a double-double with his 10 points and 13 rebounds. Greg Plater contributed 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting beyond the arc off the bench, while Larry Anderson accounted for another 12 points for the locals. In seven home games this season the 49ers have outscored the competition by more than 14 ppg, holding those opponents to a paltry 24.6 percent from three-point range in an effort to overcome a lackluster 61.3 percent at the free-throw line for the Beach. Robinson heads the scoring list with his 16.1 ppg, shooting a staggering 57.1 percent from the floor in those home dates, while Casper Ware chips in 12.3 ppg and has issued six assists per game as well.

LBSU has been tough to beat at home this season, and since this is a revenge game for the 49ers it only makes sense that the home team is given a slight edge tonight.
