Chattanooga (13-10) at College of Charleston (14-8)

GAME NOTES: The Chattanooga Mocs will try to avenge a blowout loss to the College of Charleston Cougars a few weeks ago, as the Southern Conference rivals are set for a rematch tonight at Carolina First Center in Charleston.

These teams met on January 16th in Chattanooga, and Charleston cruised to a 90-66 road win. The Cougars lead the all-time series, 13-10.

Adding to the degree of difficulty for the Mocs is the fact that they've won only two of eight road games on the year. They lost three straight on the road before returning home to pick up a pair of wins last week. The most recent of those victories was an 85-80 triumph over Appalachian State on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Charleston is unbeaten in eight games at home this season. At 9-2 in league play, the Cougars sit atop the SoCon standings. Both of those losses came on the road last week, but they did rebound with an impressive 90-72 win at Georgia Southern on Saturday.

Chattanooga has spent a good portion of practice this week at the free-throw line after going an ugly 17-of-36 (.472) against ASU. As a result, the Mocs saw an 18-point first-half lead dwindle down to one late in the second stanza, although they were able to hang on for the win. Leading the way were Ridge McKeither (18 points, 12 rebounds) and Ty Patterson (18 pts, eight rebounds), while Ricky Taylor chipped in with 11 points and eight boards. The Mocs held a key 16-7 edge on the offensive glass, which led to a 20-2 advantage in second- chance points. On the season, Patterson is averaging a team-best 15.7 ppg to go along with 5.4 rebounds per contest. Taylor is scoring 11.0 ppg, while McKeither contributes 9.2 points and 5.8 boards per tilt. Defensively, the Mocs need to tighten their perimeter defense, as opponents are averaging 9.0 threes per game.

That plays right into the hands of the Cougars, who are knocking down 9.1 treys per outing. It's when the Cougars are off target that they've had problems, as they are a horrid -11.2 in rebounding margin. Part of the reason for that is they are missing some beef down low. Jeremy Simmons started the first 17 games and was averaging 12.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. He was also shooting 58.1 percent from the floor. However, Simmons has missed the last four games with a sprained MCL and remains out indefinitely. Still, there is plenty of firepower with four other Cougars averaging double figures, led by Andrew Goudelock's 19.6 ppg. In Saturday's 18-point win at Georgia Southern, Charleston shot a blistering 57.9 percent from the field as a team. Goudelock led four Cougars in double digits with 23 points on an 8- of-14 shooting effort.

The Cougars had little trouble disposing of the Mocs in Chattanooga a few weeks ago. Even without Simmons, they've simply got too many weapons for the Mocs to match, especially playing in Charleston this time around.
