GAME NOTES: The UC Riverside Highlanders host the Cal State Northridge Matadors tonight in a Big West Conference affair at the Student Rec Center.
UC Riverside started the season with promise, bouncing back after losing its first two games to win five straight. Since then, however, things haven't gone as smooth. The Highlanders are coming off a 72-57 loss to Pacific at home, marking its seventh loss in eight games, as well as 10 out of 12.
Cal State Northridge comes to Riverside on the heels of a 76-69 victory at home against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. The Matadors had lost their previous three games. Those losses were particularly tough to swallow, as the Matadors found themselves on the losing end of both game by just a single point.
CS Northridge leads the series with UC Riverside by a 34-28 margin, and won the most recent meeting with a 64-50 decision at home on January 14th. Kenny Daniels led the way for the Matadors with 17 points. Kyle Austin provided 18 points and six boards in the loss for UCR.
The Highlanders were defeated in their second straight home game, 72-57, by the Pacific Tigers on Saturday. Sean Cunningham and Bryson Hampton were the team's only double-digit performers, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. UC Riverside trailed 37-24 at the half after shooting just 39.3 percent (11- of-28) from the floor. The defense allowed Pacific to hit 53.6 percent (15- of-28) of its attempts in the second stanza, including five three-pointers, as the Highlanders were handed their seventh conference loss of the season. Kyle Austin leads the team in scoring (16.7 ppg) as well as rebounding (6.8 rpg) this season.
Cal State Northridge is led by Kenny Daniels' 14.1 ppg, while Lenny Daniel contributes 11.2 ppg. Opponents dump an average of 76.2 ppg on the Matadors, while offensively the club is netting 71.9 ppg. On Sunday, CS Northridge defeated UC Santa Barbara on its home court, 76-69, behind Willie Galick's 19- point, nine-rebound performance. Rashaun McLemore added 14 points in the win, while Mark Hill rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. The Matadors shot 48.5 percent from the floor in the first half, helping them to a 39-37 advantage at the intermission. Solid defense held UCSB to just 8-of-27 shooting in the second half as the Matadors improved their conference record to 3-5.
Neither team is all that comfortable on the road, while UC Riverside posts a 6-4 record at home. Expect the Highlanders to rally behind the home crowd en route to their third WCC victory of the season.
