GAME NOTES: The red-hot Florida Atlantic Owls will try to continue their strong play when they battle the North Texas Mean Green this evening in a Sun Belt Conference tilt at the Super Pit.
The Owls come into this matchup riding a five-game winning streak, including an impressive 106-88 victory over FIU. With the win over the Golden Panthers, the Owls pushed their league ledger to 8-3 on the season, placing them in a tie for first place with Middle Tennessee in the East Division.
The last time the Mean Green were on the floor the team suffered a 69-64 setback to Middle Tennessee. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for North Texas, dropping the team to 6-5 in conference play.
The Mean Green have won three of the four matchups against FAU, and that includes a 79-73 decision over the Owls in the Sun Belt Tournament last year.
The Owls were outstanding in their last matchup, as the team scored 106 points in a win over rival FIU. Florida Atlantic shot a staggering 60.7 percent from the floor and also made 15-of-30 attempts from behind the arc. Greg Gantt led the way with 25 points, while Shavar Richardson added 22 points. Sanchez Hughley contributed a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Alex Tucker dished out an amazing 16 assists, to go along with 11 points. Brett Royster helped out with 12 points and nine boards in the win. Gantt is currently pacing the team with 15.8 ppg on the season, while Raymond Taylor is posting 14.3 ppg, to go along with a team-best 140 assists. As a whole, the Owls come into this game averaging a healthy 75.5 ppg.
The last time the Mean Green were on the floor the team struggled offensively, shooting just 37.5 percent from the floor in a loss to Middle Tennessee. Tristan Thompson led the way with 17 points in the setback, while Josh White added 13 points. George Odufuwa contributed a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Mean Green. On the season, the Mean Green have been solid at the offensive end of the floor, and are currently netting 74.4 ppg. White is currently pacing the team with 14.6 ppg and 82 assists, while Thompson is helping out with 14.0 ppg. Eric Tramiel is helping out with 12.4 ppg, while Odufuwa is posting a double-double of 11.3 ppg and 10.5 rpg.
Both teams have been impressive offensively, but the Owls' problems at the defensive end of the court will likely lead to a victory for North Texas.
