GAME NOTES: The Florida Gators invade Tuscaloosa tonight to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in SEC action. This game features an intriguing headline, as the Crimson Tide are coached by Anthony Grant, a long-time assistant of Gators' head coach Billy Donovan.
Florida carried a four-game win streak into Sunday's matchup with Tennessee on the road and put forth a strong effort in that tilt. Unfortunately, the Gators suffered a 61-60 loss, dropping them to 15-6 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Like Florida, Alabama is coming off a one-point loss, as the squad fell to rival Auburn on Saturday in a 58-57 final. That defeat halted a modest two- game win streak for the Tide, who are now 13-8 overall and 3-4 in conference. Of the 13 wins that 'Bama has recorded thus far, nine have come at home.
Alabama owns a 73-56 series advantage over Florida, but the Gators have won 14 of the last 17 meetings.
The Gators have played 21 games this season, and they are scoring 72.7 ppg while limiting opponents to 63.1 ppg on 41.9 percent field goal efficiency. Kenny Boynton leads Florida with 14.4 ppg, but his 37.7 percent shooting from the floor could certainly stand some improvement. Erving Walker checks in with 13.0 ppg, and while he has shot even less efficiently than Boynton, Walker does have 110 assists and 33 steals to his credit. Alex Tyus provides 12.8 ppg and 6.9 rpg, while Chandler Parsons rounds out a foursome of double-digit scorers with 10.7 ppg. Tyus scored 18 points for the Gators against Tennessee on Sunday, and Parsons pitched in 14 points. Unfortunately for Florida, it connected on only 36.4 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half, including a dismal 1-of-10 showing from three-point range.
Mikhail Torrance is the top scorer for Alabama this season with 15.1 ppg on 50.2 percent shooting from the floor, and he has dished out 116 assists as well. JaMychal Green provides 14.6 ppg and 7.2 rpg, and he is shooting an even more efficient 51.1 percent. The Crimson Tide are netting 68.4 ppg while holding their opponents to 62.2 ppg. Unfortunately, the squad struggled offensively against Auburn, as 19 turnovers clearly hurt the cause. Torrance netted 13 points and handed out six assists in that clash, while Green and Senario Hillman both finished with 10 points. Alabama led by three points at intermission, but they couldn't hang on in the second half and lost for the sixth time in the last seven meetings with the Tide.
Is there any reason to expect anything other than a close game between these two teams? This one will go down to the wire, and the narrow edge goes to Donovan, the mentor.
