GAME NOTES: Top-25 foes collide in ACC action in Durham this evening, as the 10th-ranked Duke Blue Devils welcome the 21st-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils took a break from conference action this past weekend and were dealt a humbling 89-77 loss by nationally-ranked Georgetown in Washington D.C. The setback was just the fourth on the year for Duke, which returns to ACC play still sitting atop the standings, tied with Virginia at 5-2. The Blue Devils have won 14 straight at Cameron Indoor Stadium, including all 12 bouts this season.
Paul Hewitt's Yellow Jackets are one of the youngest teams in the league, but despite that, the team is very much in the thick of a wide-open, conference race at 4-3, having already topped upper echelon teams like Clemson, North Carolina and this Duke program. Georgia Tech has won back-to-back games entering this contest, after whipping Kentucky State this past weekend, 98-50.
Georgia Tech is seeking the regular-season sweep of Duke after posting a 71-67 decision in Atlanta on January 9th. Still, there is a long way to go for the Yellow Jackets to catch up in series play, with the Blue Devils holding a 61-23 advantage all-time. Duke is 29-5 against Tech at Cameron Indoor Stadium and has won 10 of the last 11 meetings on its home floor.
The Yellow Jackets boast of two freshmen and one sophomore among the starting five, but the youth movement is certainly warranted the way the team is playing this season. Offensive proficiency is definitely apparent, with the team averaging a steady 76.1 ppg on a healthy .472 shooting. The strength of the team is in the frontcourt, where junior forward Gani Lawal (14.5 ppg, 9.0 rpg) and freshman Derrick Favors (11.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg) form quite the tandem. Sophomore Iman Shumpert runs the show for Tech and can both score (10.3 ppg) and distribute (4.0 apg). Senior Zachery Peacock (9.6 ppg) and freshman Mfon Udofia (9.0 ppg) provide further scoring depth. It was another freshman that was the star in the win over Kentucky State, as Glen Rice Jr. came off the bench to lead the way with 15 points, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. D'Andre Bell added 14 points, followed by Lawal and Lance Storrs, who chipped in with 11 points apiece. The Yellow Jackets were uncontested most of the game, converting a ridiculous 71.2 percent of their shots (37-of-52), including 9-of-17 from behind the arc.
The Blue Devils fell victim to a hot Georgetown squad that converted 66.7 percent from the floor, including 77.3 percent in the first half. A 13-point deficit at the break was simply too much to overcome for the visiting team. Nolan Smith led the way for Duke with 19 points, followed closely by Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer, who finished with 18 and 17 points, respectively. It has been that trio of players that has done most of the damage for Duke this season. Scheyer and Smith represent one of the most productive backcourts in the nation. Scheyer leads the team in both scoring (18.7 ppg) and assists (118) and has a team-high 57 three-pointers to his credit. Smith is a close second in the scoring column (18.2 ppg) and is converting 46.5 percent of his long range attempts. Singler gives the team a frontcourt presence, averaging 16.1 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game. When on their game, the Blue Devils have the ability to dominate at both ends of the floor, averaging 81.9 ppg, while holding opponents to just 62.8.
The Yellow Jackets have already beaten the Blue Devils once this season and that should give them plenty of confidence coming into this game. However, Duke turns things up a notch at home and will probably remain unbeaten in Durham when all is said and done tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
