GAME NOTES: The Jacksonville State Gamecocks plan on getting back to business tonight as they take on the Morehead State Eagles in an Ohio Valley Conference showdown at Johnson Arena.
On Tuesday night, the Gamecocks had a meeting with Tennessee State planned, but the game had to be postponed due to a leak in the roof of the Gentry Center in Nashville. As a result, JSU enters this contest still riding a two- game win streak thanks to victories over Southeast Missouri State and Eastern Illinois.
As for the Eagles, who are second in the OVC standings with a record of 9-2, they finally had their 11-game win streak snapped on Sunday afternoon when the Austin Peay Governors slipped by with a 56-55 win on their home floor. The setback was the first for Morehead State since bowing to Weber State by a basket on December 22nd.
Morehead won the first meeting of the season back on January 9th by a score of 78-71 on the road, which means the all-time series continues to favor the Eagles at 10-6. In the first encounter, Kenneth Faried recorded one of his double-doubles this season with 16 points and 13 rebounds for the visitors.
With under seven minutes to play in the second half, the Gamecocks led by only four points against Eastern Illinois in the last game, but then JSU went on a minor run and came up with the 15-point victory at home. Trenton Marshall dropped a team-best 25 points on 6-of-11 shooting behind the three-point line, followed by Nick Murphy with 14 and four assists, while Jeremy Bynum and Stephen Hall registered 11 and 10 points, respectively. Marshall, who won the OVC Newcomer of the Week Award on Monday, continues to lead this group in scoring with his 18.6 ppg and has the most three-point baskets (48), but it is Bynum (10.6 ppg) who has the best shooting percentage out on the perimeter at 43.8 percent and that has the entire team checking in at 37.6 percent over the course of 21 games.
A layup by Demonte Harper with just over six minutes remaining in regulation put the Eagles up by 11 points over Austin Peay, but then the defense for Morehead fell apart and allowed the Governors to close out the contest on a 16-4 run. Kenneth Faried did all he could to keep Morehead in line for the win, logging 19 points, 13 rebounds, five blocked shots and four steals, but he also turned the ball over four times, the team suffering 20 miscues in the close call. Maze Stallworth added 12 points and Harper 11 in the setback. Even though he plays in a conference that largely goes unnoticed, Faried is still a specimen with his 17.0 ppg and 13.7 rpg overall this season. When it comes to league outings, the big man steps it up a few notches in the rebounding department with a staggering 15.5 rpg. Because of him, the Eagles are beating OVC foes by almost 10 rpg and are now outscoring those same programs by nine points per contest.
With just a single win on the road this season, the Gamecocks are far from a serious threat to Morehead State tonight, even with the extended layoff due to Tuesday's postponement.
