GAME NOTES: The Maryland Terrapins invade Tallahassee tonight to do battle with the Florida State Seminoles in ACC action.
Maryland carried a four-game win streak and plenty of confidence into Sunday's road clash with Clemson. Unfortunately, the Terps struggled at the offensive end in that tilt, falling by a 62-53 final. They are still 14-6 overall and 4-2 in conference, as their only other league loss came in overtime to Wake Forest.
Wins in three of the last four outings have enabled Florida State to improve to 16-5 overall and 4-3 in ACC play. On Saturday, the Seminoles managed to knock off Boston College on the road by a 61-57 final, and they now return home where they are 10-1 thus far.
Maryland beat Florida State, 77-68, back on January 10th, improving the Terps' lead in the all-time series to 27-10.
Through 20 games, Maryland is scoring 80.1 ppg on 48.1 percent shooting from the floor, and the club is permitting 64.6 ppg to opponents on 37 percent field goal efficiency. The Terps have four double-digit scorers in the lineup, and leading the pack is Greivis Vasquez as expected with his 17.5 ppg and 120 assists. Landon Milbourne checks in with 14.3 ppg, and Sean Mosley provides 12.3 ppg. As for Eric Hayes, he rounds out the foursome with 10.9 ppg. Maryland connected on only 34.6 percent of its field goal attempts against Clemson on Sunday, and 26 turnovers hurt the cause as well. Jordan Williams tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Hayes contributed 11 points. Vasquez was limited to 10 points in that tilt.
Solomon Alabi leads Florida State with 12.9 ppg on 58.8 percent shooting from the floor, and he is ripping down 7.0 rpg to go along with 54 blocked shots. Providing support for Alabi up front is Chris Singleton, who brings 11.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 48 steals and 36 blocks to the mix. The Seminoles are generating 71.2 ppg overall while limiting opponents to 60.5 ppg on 36.2 percent shooting. They are outrebounding foes by 5.5 rpg and are one of the nation's truly elite defensive teams. In the recent win over Boston College, FSU overcame a 1-of-12 effort from three-point range by earning a 39-22 rebounding advantage and a 10-3 edge in points from the foul line. Alabi had 16 points in that tilt, while Singleton, Ryan Reid and Michael Snaer all tallied 10 points.
Defense will be the difference in this game, as the Seminoles will hold Vasquez and company in check.
