GAME NOTES: Big Ten Conference rivals will square off in Bloomington tonight as the eighth-ranked Purdue Boilermakers will attempt to avoid an upset at the hands of the Indiana Hoosiers.
Purdue opened the season with 14 consecutive victories before hitting an unexpected rough patch in which it lost three straight outings. It certainly appears that the Boilermakers are back on track, as their last four games have resulted in wins, including Sunday's 66-46 romp over Penn State. They are now 18-3 overall and 6-3 in Big Ten play.
As for Indiana, it owns 9-11 overall record which includes a 3-5 league ledger. Losses in back-to-back outings, including a 72-70 setback to Illinois on Saturday, sends the Hoosiers into this tilt with shaky confidence. On a positive note, seven of their nine wins this season have come at home.
Purdue owns a 108-84 advantage in the all-time series with Indiana, but the Boilermakers haven't won in Bloomington since 1999.
As has been the case all season, Purdue continues to rely heavily on the trio of E'Twaun Moore, Robbie Hummel and JaJuan Johnson to be effective every time out. Moore leads the team with 17.3 ppg, and he is shooting 50.4 percent from the floor. Hummel checks in with 16.2 ppg and 7.2 rpg, while Johnson, a 52.8 percent shooter, provides 14.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg and 40 blocks. The Boilermakers are holding opponents to 61.5 ppg on 40.2 percent field goal efficiency, and they are posting 74.8 ppg at the offensive end. In the 20-point romp over Penn State, Purdue held the Nittany Lions to 31.3 percent shooting. Also impressive was the fact that the Boilermakers finished with 18 assists against only six turnovers. Hummel netted 23 points in the win.
Against Illinois last weekend, Indiana connected on only 35 percent of its field goal attempts, the most obvious reason for the loss. The Hoosiers got 22 points from Verdell Jones III, and he dished out five assists as well. Unfortunately, Jones shot just 5-of-20 from the floor, far from impressive. Jordan Hulls and Devan Dumes pitched in 11 points for the Hoosiers, who allowed the Illini to shoot nearly 50 percent overall. Jones is averaging 13.9 ppg this season on sub-40 percent shooting, and Christian Watford provides 13.9 ppg. The Hoosiers are outscoring foes, 69.5 ppg to 68.8 ppg, but the team's losing record doesn't reflect that positive differential.
Purdue will get a victory in Bloomington tonight, as the Boilermakers are simply a better team than Indiana. Expect a double-digit win for the visitors.
