GAME NOTES: McBraver Arena will be the setting for an Ohio Valley Conference rematch, when the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles visit the Eastern Kentucky Colonels tonight.
The Golden Eagles were homecourt winners over Southeast Missouri State 82-68 in their last outing on Saturday. They've won four straight and now stand at 12-10 overall and 6-5 in the OVC. Tennessee Tech is 5-6 on the road, including 2-3 in conference games.
The Colonels were 75-58 winners at Tennessee State on Sunday in a game that was postponed a day because of bad weather. The win broke a short two-game losing streak. Eastern Kentucky has won five of its last seven games and stands at 15-8 overall and 7-4 in conference play. The Colonels have won 11 of 12 starts on their homecourt this season.
Eastern Kentucky holds a 67-52 lead in the all-time series, including a 78-73 win on the Golden Eagles' homecourt on January 9th.
Kevin Murphy scored 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles to their victory over Southeast Missouri State. Elijah Muhammad netted 17 points for Tennessee Tech. Zach Bailey added 13, Frank Davis 12 and Jud Dillard 10. The Golden Eagles were without forward Terrell Barnes, who is dealing with a hand injury and is listed as questionable for tonight. Murphy is the leading scorer on the ballclub at 15.2 ppg., which puts him sixth in the OVC in scoring. He's shooting 44.9 percent from the floor. Davis is averaging 14.8 ppg. while hitting 46.9 percent from the floor and 46.7 percent from outside the arc. Muhammad is also in double figures at 11.9 ppg. and ranks third in the conference at 4.5 assists per contest. Alfred Jones leads the team in rebounding at 5.6 rpg. Tennessee Tech is shooting an impressive 48.3 percent from the floor and 41.0 percent from long range, while scoring 76.4 ppg. The team is giving up 76.8 ppg and opponents are shooting 46.3 percent from the floor against them.
Justin Stommes scored 19 points, as the Colonels cruised to a 75-58 triumph over the Tennessee State Tigers in Ohio Valley Conference action. Joshua Jones tallied 16 points for Eastern Kentucky while Papa Oppong added 12 points. The Colonels scored the last six points of the first half to take a 32-27 lead at the break, then opened the second half with a 17-9 run to break the game open. Stommes leads the Colonels in scoring at 15.1 ppg, which puts him seventh in the conference. He's shooting 53.8 percent from the floor and 43.8 percent from long range. Stommes is also averaging 3.7 assists per game. Taylor is next in scoring at 13.7 ppg. Oppong is scoring in double figures at 11.3 ppg, while Spencer Perrin is the leading rebounder on the roster at 5.5 boards per contest. The Colonels are shooting 48.3 percent from the floor as a team. They're also doing well from the foul line, shooting 72.9 percent from the stripe as a team. Four of their five starters are averaging over 70.0 percent from the line. Eastern Kentucky is scoring 72.0 ppg, while allowing just 66.1 ppg. at the other end.
Foul shooting often makes the difference in a tight game, which this one figures to be. The Colonels will make some key free throws down the stretch to pull this one out.
