GAME NOTES: The Wright State Raiders and the Valparaiso Crusaders meet this evening in a Horizon League affair.
Wright State currently owns its fourth three-game winning streak of the season, and the streaky Raiders are 14-8 overall, including 7-4 in league action. They were most recently in action on Saturday when they crushed Loyola-Chicago by a 66-48 final. Tonight, Wright State will attempt to improve its dismal 3-7 record in true road games.
Valparaiso is clearly playing its best ball, as wins in five of the last six outings have enabled the club to turn around a season that seemed to be headed for disaster. The Crusaders are now a respectable 6-5 in Horizon League action and 11-12 overall. They beat a solid Green Bay squad on Sunday by an 84-79 final and carry a 6-1 home record into this evening's affair.
Wright State edged Valparaiso by a 59-57 final back on January 10th, and the Raiders own a 9-5 edge in the all-time series with the Crusaders as a result.
Through 22 games, Wright State is scoring 68.6 ppg while allowing 59.5 ppg to opponents. Todd Brown, who has started every game for the Raiders, leads the team with 13.0 ppg. Vaughn Duggins checks in with 14.4 ppg, and Troy Tabler provides 10.0 ppg. In Saturday's game against Loyola, Duggins netted 21 points in 39 minutes of action, while Cory Copperwood contributed 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Raiders finished with 14 assists against only seven turnovers, and they earned a 36-31 rebounding edge as well. At the defensive end, Wright State held Loyola to 36.4 percent shooting while forcing the Ramblers into 17 giveaways.
Brandon Wood is a standout performer for Valparaiso who is netting 18.6 ppg through 23 outings. Cory Johnson provides 15.7 ppg on 57.6 percent shooting from the floor, including a stellar 60.9 percent from three-point range. More than just a scorer, Johnson leads the club with 6.2 rpg. Brandon McPherson is the club's third and final double-digit scorer with 11.2 ppg. Wood poured in 26 points for Valpo in the victory over Green Bay on Sunday, and Johnson pitched in 20 points. McPherson and Matt Kenney tallied 11 points apiece, and McPherson also dished out six assists. The Crusaders connected on 58.7 percent of their field goal attempts and overcame disadvantages in both rebounding and points from the foul line.
In what figures to be a close game from start to finish, give a narrow edge to Valparaiso. The Crusaders will avenge the earlier loss to the Raiders.
