Youngstown State (8-13) at Loyola-Chicago (12-9)

GAME NOTES: A couple of teams struggling to keep up with the rest of the Horizon League clash at the Gentile Center tonight, as the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers play host to the Penguins of Youngstown State.

Loyola, which is 7-3 at home in 2009-10, has struggled with a four-game slide and has won just one of the last eight games overall after opening the campaign an impressive 11-2. On Saturday, the Ramblers scored less than 50 points for the second time during this current losing streak, suffering a 66-48 setback at Wright State.

As for the Penguins, they too have hit a rough patch in recent weeks with just a single victory in the last six games, and that one triumph came against NC Central a week ago. On Saturday, YSU was back at it in Horizon League play and was dealt a 77-69 defeat by Cleveland State on the road.

Dating back to 1956, this series is now tied at 11 games apiece after the Penguins picked up a 71-67 victory over the visiting Ramblers last month.

The Penguins gave it their all with 50 percent shooting from the field in the second half, including 7-of-11 behind the three-point line against Cleveland State over the weekend. However, YSU could not climb out of the hole it dug itself with a feeble 22.9 percent shooting from the floor in the first half of the meeting. DeAndre Mays tallied a game-high 27 points, followed by Kelvin Bright and Vance Cooksey with 12 and 10 points, respectively, in the setback. Mays, who leads the team in assists with 61 over 21 games, is also the leading scorer for the program with his 13.8 ppg, although his mere 35.3 percent shooting from the floor is rather weak, especially when considering he has made 36.5 percent of his three-point tries. Sirlester Martin accounts for another 11.7 ppg and is tops on the glass with close to six rebounds per contest, but his downfall is at the free-throw line with a mere 60.4 percent accuracy.

If the Ramblers thought they were suffering in the first half of their meeting against Wright State over the weekend with just nine field goals, there's no way the squad could have been prepared for a mere 7-of-24 shooting from the floor after the break. Marcus Thomas, who played 21 minutes off the bench, knocked down 4-of-6 behind the three-point line to come up with a team-best 13 points, the only player on the team to hit for double figures in the loss. Thomas, who has come off the bench in all 21 games this season and is averaging less than 15 minutes per outing and just 6.5 ppg, has been one of the more successful three-point shooters for the program with his 42.2 percent accuracy. Geoff McCammon (9.5 ppg) is another three-point specialist who has made good on 45.7 percent, but still this squad is struggling to produce points on a regular basis with just 63.9 ppg.

Both of these teams can watch their offenses disappear at the drop of a hat, so assuming the Ramblers will perform better at home the edge has to go to Loyola, albeit slightly
