GAME NOTES: Owners of the nation's longest winning streak, the Siena Saints will be put to the test tonight against the red-hot Iona Gaels in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference showdown at the Times Union Center.
Winners of 13 straight games, the Saints have taken complete control of the MAAC and are on the verge of their fourth straight 20-win campaign. Most recently, Siena crushed Marist, 79-60, on Saturday to remain perfect in conference play at 12-0. Now at 19-4 overall, the Saints return back home, where they have another impressive streak going, having won each of their past 32 games at the Times Union Center. That run is good for the second longest in the nation, trailing only Kansas.
On the flip side, Iona has its own streak to be proud of, running off eight wins in a row. It is the best run for the program since 2000, as the Gaels have moved into sole possession of second place in the MAAC at 9-3. They handled Canisius, 72-53, on Monday to avenge an early loss to the Golden Griffins.
The Gaels lead the head-to-head series with Siena, 48-44, but the Saints have won eight straight in the rivalry, including a 73-60 triumph in New Rochelle earlier this season.
Iona knocked down 47.4 percent of its attempts from the floor and 11-of-22 from beyond the arc, as it coasted past Canisius earlier in the week. The Gaels also did a nice job on defense, forcing 21 turnovers and limiting Canisius to just a 38.8 percent shooting effort from the field. Alejo Rodriguez led the charge with a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards, while Mike McFadden had 12 points. The duo helped pick up the slack for Scott Machado, who was limited to five points on just 1-of-8 field goals. Despite the off night, Machado is still the most important player to this team and he leads the Gaels with 11.8 ppg, 4.2 apg and 42 steals. He is the lone player scoring in double figures for Iona, which has thrived on defense, holding foes to 61.5 ppg and forcing them into 17.0 turnovers per game.
The Saints shot a blistering 60.4 percent from the field, as they breezed past Marist in their most recent outing. Siena also controlled the boards, 30-21, in addition to scoring 21 points off 12 Marist giveaways. Alex Franklin led the way with a 22-point effort, while Ryan Rossiter logged a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards. Edwin Ubiles also got involved in his return to the lineup, as he posted 15 points. For the season, Franklin tops the roster in scoring at 16.1 ppg and he is also grabbing 8.0 rpg. Ubiles checks in with 15.8 ppg, and Rossiter averages a double-double with 13.8 ppg and a team-high 10.4 rpg. Clarence Jackson tacks on 13.6 ppg for the Saints, who are tallying 76.3 ppg.
The Saints are the team to beat in the MAAC thanks to their versatility. Iona will give Siena all it can handle tonight, but in the end, expect the Saints to march on.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
