GAME NOTES: The Rider Broncs try to extend their win streak to four in a row tonight as they battle the Greyhounds of Loyola-Maryland in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference showdown at Alumni Gym in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
Rider, which is now an even 6-6 in MAAC play this season, won the first two games of this current run by a combined four points against the likes of Niagara and Manhattan, but last Saturday the squad equaled its highest scoring output of the season with an 88-80 victory versus Fairfield on the road.
As for the Greyhounds, they've won just one of their last five games and two of the last nine, and both of those triumphs came against a Marist program that is one of the weakest in the nation with a record of only 1-21 at the moment. Sunday saw Loyola drop an 86-77 final against Niagara at home.
The Greyhounds won the first meeting of the season between these two schools last month with a 68-66 decision on their home floor. As a result, the all- time series now stands at 20-14 in favor of Rider, even though Loyola has won three of the last four encounters overall.
The Greyhounds let Niagara put together a strong run to close out the first half of their meeting last weekend, big enough that it sent Loyola to the loss column yet again. Brett Harvey scored a team-best 18 points, even though he shot only 4-of-20 from the floor, while Brian Rudolph checked in with 15 points, followed by J'hared Hall and Julius Brooks with 14 and 10 points, respectively, for a team that shot just 35.2 percent from the field and 5- of-27 beyond the arc. Even though he has missed five games this season, Harvey is the top scorer for the Greyhounds with his 13.8 ppg, while Jamal Barney was the other double-digit scorer for the program with his 13.3 ppg, but he has been out of action since the third week of January. Either way, Loyola is far from an offensive force this season with an average of only 64.2 ppg, but at least the squad is giving up just 64.9 ppg.
Except for Mike Ringgold who finished with nine points, every starter hit for double figures as the Broncs posted the win over Fairfield last Saturday. Ryan Thompson, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, erupted for 31 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and four steals in the triumph, while Justin Robinson tallied 15 points and five thefts. Novar Gadson added 14 points and Jhamar Youngblood 11 and five assists as the team overcame 20 turnovers by shooting 54 percent from the field and logging 16 steals of their own. A starter in all 24 games for the Broncs this season, Ryan Thompson has scored 56 points in the last two games, but his season has been anything but smooth as he shooting just 41.3 percent from the field and is averaging a modest 15.6 ppg. Robinson comes in with 13.0 ppg, but he too is having his issues from the floor at 40.9 percent, and yet he has made good on a strong 44.8 percent of his three-point tries along the way. Because the top scorers on the team are struggling, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Rider is hitting a collective 41.7 percent from the floor.
With their roster taking a number of hits this season the Greyhounds were bound to have a hard time against the stronger teams in the MAAC, and tonight is one of those instances.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
