GAME NOTES: The Manhattan Jaspers will try to avenge an earlier loss to the Marist Red Foxes, as the two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference squads clash tonight at Draddy Gym.
The Red Foxes are in the midst of a simply dreadful campaign, winning just one of their first 22 outings. That lone win however, did come against tonight's opponent, a 72-66 besting of the Jaspers back on January 2nd. Since that triumph though, Marist has fallen in 10 straight games, including a 79-60 setback to Siena on Saturday. The Red Foxes are in the basement of the MAAC standings at 1-11.
Slightly ahead of Marist in the MAAC standings is Manhattan, which has gone just 2-10 against conference foes. The Jaspers are currently stuck in a seven- game slide and that includes a 72-44 loss at Saint Peter's on Sunday.
Despite dropping the first meeting of the campaign, the Jaspers still lead the head-to-head series with Marist by a 19-13 count.
In their loss to Siena this past weekend, Marist simply lacked defense, allowing the Saints to shoot a blistering 60.4 percent from the floor in a 79-60 decision. The Red Foxes also lost the battle on the boards, 30-21, and that wasn't surprising considering they are being outrebounded by 5.9 rpg on the season. Korey Bauer scored 18 points to lead the team in the loss, while Daye Kaba checked in with 17 points and five boards. On the season, Marist has no players averaging in double figures, as the team is managing only 57.7 ppg. Candon Rusin and Kaba are tied for the team-lead in scoring at 9.0 ppg, with Rusin shooting 41.0 percent from downtown and Kaba grabbing 4.8 rpg.
The Jaspers shot a miserable 30.5 percent from the field, including just 2- of-9 from long distance, as they were thrashed by SPC on Sunday. Manhattan had trouble following its missed shots as well, getting dominated on the boards, 55-29. Rico Pickett posted 12 points and six rebounds to guide the team in defeat. He currently tops the roster in scoring at 17.7 ppg, to go with 4.2 rpg. Darryl Crawford has provided a nice complement to Pickett and he comes in with 14.4 ppg and a team-best 6.0 rpg.
Both teams are struggling greatly at the moment, so this is a good chance for one club to grab a much needed victory. Go with the Jaspers, as they are hosting this game and they have better scoring options.
