Portland State (9-12) at Sacramento State (8-15)

GAME NOTES: Portland State will try to complete the season sweep of Sacramento State, when the Hornets host the Vikings this evening in a Big Sky Conference matchup at the Nest.

Earlier this season the Vikings pounded Sacramento State, 94-66. With that victory, Portland State pushed its lead in the all-time series against the Hornets to a 20-9 margin.

The Vikings improved their league record to 4-5 on the season with an 85-77 victory over Eastern Washington. The win snapped a three-game losing skid for Portland State, which is just 3-9 on the road this season.

As for the Hornets, they snapped a five-game slide with a 72-55 victory over Idaho State in their last contest. It was just the second win in the last 10 games for Sacramento State, which is in last place in the Big Sky Conference with a 2-8 record.

The Vikings were sensational in their last matchup, as the team scored 85 points in a win over Eastern Washington. Portland State shot 49.2 percent from the field and finished with an 8-of-15 showing from behind the arc. Jamie Jones led the way with 26 points, while Dominic Waters added 15 points and six assists. Melvin Jones added 15 points as well, while Julius Thomas contributed 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Throughout the season the Vikings have done a solid job offensively, averaging 79.0 ppg. Waters is pacing the team with 18.4 ppg and 99 assists, while Jones is helping out with 13.5 ppg and a team-best 7.4 rpg. However, what has hurt Portland State has been its play defensively, as the squad is surrendering a whopping 81.7 ppg.

Offensively the Hornets have had no sting on the season, averaging just 64.1 ppg, behind a pedestrian 40.9 percent shooting effort. Sultan Toles-Bey is the only player averaging double figures on the season, as the guard is netting 10.8 ppg, to go along with 73 assists. Justin Eller has been the top player in the paint for Sacramento State, as the center is netting 9.7 ppg, to go along with 5.7 rpg. The Hornets put forth one of their better performances the last time they were on the court, as the team scored 72 points behind a 52.4 percent shooting effort, which included a 9-of-18 clip from long range. Duro Bjegovic posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds in the win, while Toles-Bey contributed a team-high 20 points.

The Hornets were successful the last time they were on the floor, but the team will likely take a step back this evening against Portland State, which possesses a high-power offensive attack.
