GAME NOTES: The Harvard Crimson put their perfect home record on the line tonight as they host fellow Ivy League school Princeton at Lavietes Pavilion in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Harvard, which is third in the league standings at the moment with a record of 3-1, has won all seven of its home dates in 2009-10. In fact, the team had been enjoying a seven-game win streak overall heading into last Saturday's matchup with Cornell on the road, but that encounter turned out to be the worst loss of the season for the Crimson, 86-50.
As for the Tigers, who are just ahead of Harvard in the standings with a 2-0 mark versus the rest of the conference, they are enjoying a four-game win streak after topping Yale last Saturday with a 58-45 victory. In fact, Princeton has now won nine of its last 10 outings, with the lone loss being a 52-50 decision versus Maine the first week of January.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Princeton leads by a count of 123-38.
The defense came alive for the Tigers in their last outing as they limited Yale to a mere six field goals in the second half and 35 percent shooting from the floor overall in the 13-point road win. Princeton got by with just a single player scoring in double figures as Douglas Davis tallied 13 points for a squad that shot an impressive 51.1 percent from the floor on the night in New Haven. Davis, the leading scorer for the squad in each of the last three games and five of the previous six overall, is putting up 14.1 ppg while shooting 40.8 percent behind the three-point line. Dan Mavraides accounts for another 11.5 ppg, but in his case he has been struggling with just 38.6 percent accuracy from the floor for a team that is posting 60.1 ppg. Most importantly, this squad has been limiting opponents to a minuscule 53.9 ppg, one of the best marks in all of college basketball.
Jeremy Lin scored 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field last weekend against Cornell, but his efforts meant little as the Crimson suffered the huge 36-point road loss to the best team in the Ivy League so far this season. Lin was also 7-of-8 at the free-throw line, but his massive eight turnovers were almost one-third of the team's total of 25 miscues, compared to the squad's 13 made field goals. Lin continues to be one of the top point producers in the conference this season with his 17.1 pg, based on 53 percent shooting from the field. Keith Wright contributes another 10.3 ppg to the cause as he shoots almost 60 percent from the floor. Throw in reserve Kyle Casey (9.1 ppg) who is converting 62.5 percent of his field goal attempts and it is easy to see how this group makes good on 48.6 percent on the season thus far.
The Crimson were taken apart by Cornell last weekend, so now the Tigers are well aware of how to attack Harvard and will use that information to their advantage tonight.
