GAME NOTES: The Cornell Big Red are clearly favored in tonight's Ivy League clash with the visiting Yale Bulldogs.
Yale carried a two-game win streak into last Saturday's matchup with Princeton, but that tilt resulted in a 58-45 defeat. The Bulldogs are now 8-13 overall, including 2-2 in Ivy action. Tonight, they will attempt to improve a 2-6 record in true road games.
There is little doubt that Cornell is the best team in the Ivy League. The club is a stellar 18-3 overall this season, including 4-0 in Ivy action, and the Big Red carry a six-game win streak into this evening's affair. Last Saturday, they improved to 7-1 at home with an 86-50 romp over Harvard, and the fact that Cornell only lost to national powerhouse Kansas by five points on the road proves that this team is legitimate.
Cornell owns a narrow 105-101 series edge over Yale in the all-time series, but the Bulldogs won the most recent meeting last season by 12 points.
Alex Zampier is the leading scorer for Yale with 17.8 ppg, and he is also tops with 49 steals. The only other double-digit scorer for the Bulldogs is Michael Sands, who provides 10.6 ppg and 6.0 rpg. Yale is generating 66.9 ppg on 42.5 percent field goal efficiency, and the team is allowing 69.1 ppg. In the 13- point loss to Princeton last weekend, Sands scored 14 points, while Zampier tallied 13 points off the bench. The Bulldogs connected on only 35 percent of their field goal attempts including a 26.1 percent shooting effort in the second half. Defensively, the club permitted the Tigers to make good on 51.1 percent of their total shots.
Ryan Wittman continues to lead Cornell in scoring as expected with 17.5 ppg, and his 41.3 percent shooting from three-point range has been impressive. Jeff Foote checks in with 12.4 ppg and 8.4 rpg for the Big Red, and he is a 59.2 percent shooter from the floor. Louis Dale rounds out a solid trio with 10.7 ppg and 90 assists for the Big Red, who are racking up 76.2 ppg while surrendering just 63.5 ppg to opponents. Foote was tremendous against Harvard last time out, as he tallied 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes of action. All five starters reached double figures in scoring for the Big Red, who earned a 37-28 rebounding advantage and forced 25 turnovers. Cornell committed just eight of its own giveaways and held the Crimson to 36.1 percent field goal efficiency.
Cornell clearly gets the edge in this game. Expect the Big Red to lead from wire to wire.
