Appalachian State (12-10) at Western Carolina (18-5)

GAME NOTES: The top two teams in the Southern Conference's North Division hook up this evening when the division-leading Western Carolina Catamounts host the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

Appalachian State comes in after losing 87-76 at home to King College Monday night, its second straight loss, and third in its last five games. The loss dropped the Mountaineers to 12-10 overall. They stand at 6-4 in conference play, a game-and-a-half behind the Catamounts in the standings. Appalachian State has struggled on the road this season, going just 4-7 outside their own building.

Western Carolina prevailed at home over Georgia Southern Thursday night, 83-68. The Catamounts have won two straight and six of their last eight. They're 18-5 overall and lead the SoCon's North Division with an 8-3 mark. Western Carolina is a perfect 12-0 at the Ramsey Center this season.

The Mountaineers prevailed on their homecourt 87-84 in the first meeting of the season between these two teams exactly two weeks ago. Appalachian State leads the all-time series, 109-63.

Josh Hunter scored 22 points for Appalachian State in Monday night's loss. Jeremi Booth added 13 points, while Donald Sims, the leading scorer on the ballclub, was held to just 11 after shooting just 3-of-13 from the floor. Isaac Butts provided eight rebounds to pace the team. Despite the outing, Sims still is averaging 18.9 ppg, good for second in the conference. He's also leading the country in free-throw percentage at 94.4 percent. Sims is the only player on the roster in double figures, although Kellen Brand is at 9.9 ppg. Butts is averaging 8.0 rpg, while Ryann Abraham is dealing out 2.7 assists per contest. The Mountaineers are shooting 46.6 percent from the floor as a team while averaging 73.8 points per contest. They're surrendering 71.2 ppg. defensively.

Brandon Giles scored 19 points to help Western Carolina to its win on Thursday. Adrian Galliard added 15 points, while Mike Williams and Harouna Mutombo had 14 each. Jake Robinson added 11 points, while Brigham Waginger grabbed eight rebounds. Robinson remains the leading scorer on the balllclub at 12.0 ppg, hitting 44.7 percent from the floor and 41.4 percent from three- point range. Waginger is next on the scoring list at 11.6 ppg, ranking second in the conference in assists at 4.6 apg. Williams is also scoring in double figures at 11.1 ppg. As a team, Western Carolina is shooting 45.6 percent from the floor, but the Catamounts are struggling at the foul line, where they're shooting just 65.2 percent. Western Carolina is scoring 75.8 ppg, while giving up just 67.5 ppg.

Appalachian State has struggled on the road all year. The home gym of the division leader would not seem to be the setting for a resurgence.
