GAME NOTES: The Auburn Tigers have had a full week to prepare for this afternoon's SEC showdown with the Arkansas Razorbacks at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville.
Auburn entered last Saturday's clash with rival Alabama having lost two consecutive games and five of the last six overall. Fortunately, the Tigers were able to draw energy from the home crowd and beat the Tide by a narrow 58-57 final. They are now 11-11 on the season, but their 2-5 league record and 2-4 mark in true road games both need to be improved.
As for Arkansas, it knocked off Georgia on Wednesday by a 72-68 final, and the Razorbacks have now won their last three outings to improve to 4-3 against conference opponents. The Razorbacks, who own the same overall record as Auburn, have recorded nine of their 11 wins at home this season.
Arkansas owns a 23-15 series advantage over Auburn, but the Tigers won both meetings last season.
DeWayne Reed, Frankie Sullivan and Lucas Hargrove have each started every game for Auburn this season, and they are the club's tops scorers. Reed leads the charge with 16.1 ppg despite his 39.2 percent shooting from the field, and he has dished out 97 assists. Sullivan and Hargrove check in with 13.2 ppg apiece, and Hargrove is ripping down 7.1 rpg. As for Tay Waller, the fourth and final double-digit scorer in the fold, he provides 12.6 ppg. Auburn is generating 75.3 ppg while allowing 73.0 ppg to opponents. Waller scored 20 points for the Tigers in the win over Alabama last weekend, and Hargrove tallied 14 points. Reed posted 10 points, but he shot just 2-of-9 from the floor and finished with six turnovers and only one assist. Despite the carelessness of Reed, his Tigers still committed four fewer turnovers that the Tide, who finished with 19 giveaways.
Courtney Fortson has ignited the Razorbacks since returning to the team, and he exploded for 27 points in the victory over Georgia last time out. Mike Washington posted 15 points and eight rebounds in that affair, while Marshawn Powell provided 11 points. Arkansas finished with only nine assists against 17 turnovers in that clash, but the Hogs also forced 17 turnovers. Fortson joined the active roster eight games ago, and he is averaging 19.8 ppg despite his lackluster 38.5 percent shooting from the floor. Rotnei Clarke provides 16.7 ppg on 47.1 percent accuracy from three-point range, and Marshawn Powell checks in with 16.7 ppg. Powell provides 15.1 ppg and 6.9 rpg, while Washington is posting 13.4 ppg. The Razorbacks are generating 75.0 ppg while allowing 73.3 ppg to foes.
Arkansas figures to take care of business at home today. Although Fortson doesn't shoot the ball efficiently, he brings confidence to the floor for the Razorbacks.
