(12) B-Y-U (22-2) at U-N-L-V (18-4)

GAME NOTES: The UNLV Runnin' Rebels try to push their win streak to five in a row this afternoon as they tangle with 12th-ranked BYU in a Mountain West Conference showdown at the Thomas & Mack Center in Sin City.

Since losing in this building to Utah back on January 16th, the Rebels have put together a four-game win streak, which means they've actually won six of their last seven games overall and are now 6-2 in MWC action as a result. Wednesday night saw the program demolish Wyoming in Laramie by a score of 78-50, the most lopsided victory since the team defeated USC Upstate by 30 points the third week of December.

As for the Cougars, they ran their home win streak to 19 in a row on Tuesday night as they crushed the visiting TCU Horned Frogs in a 76-56 final. The win was the second straight and the 17th in the last 19 games overall for the program, now off to its best start since the 1987-88 campaign.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Rebels lead by a count of 16-14 and won the last meeting in Las Vegas by a slim 75-74 score, but the first meeting of this season at the Marriott Center in Provo fell in favor of the home team by a score of 77-73.

Jimmer Fredette led a trio of double-digit scorers on Tuesday night against TCU as he tallied 26 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, including 4- of-6 behind the three-point line as the team converted a healthy 11-of-25 beyond the arc. Noah Hartsock added 14 points and Jackson Emery another 12 as he too converted a quartet of triples, while Chris Miles collected 11 rebounds to offset his mere 1-of-5 shooting from the field. Fredette continues to be one of the most exciting scorers in the Mountain West Conference this season, producing 21.5 ppg on the strength of his incredible 49.5 percent effort out on the perimeter. A 90.1 percent shooter at the free-throw line, Fredette has also played the part of leading assist man for the Cougars with his 107 dishes so far this season. Emery accounts for another 12.0 ppg and Tyler Haws, despite being held scoreless in the last outing, is in for 11.8 ppg as the team outscores opponents by a whopping 19.4 ppg through 24 contests.

More than anything else, the defense for the Rebels was simply suffocating against Wyoming on the road earlier this week, limiting the Cowboys to just 28.6 percent shooting from the floor and a total of 14 made field goals. The Pokes didn't do themselves any favors by hitting just 17-of-31 at the free- throw line either. Matt Shaw came off the bench and posted 16 points in a mere 20 minutes, while Tre'Von Willis checked in with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Chace Stanback 12 points in the victory as well. Willis, who is averaging close to 28 minutes per game for UNLV, is using his time to generate a team-best 17.2 ppg, even though his three-point shooting has been rather weak at just 27.2 percent. Stanback adds another 10.5 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer, yet he too is having issues out on the perimeter where he is only 29.3 percent accurate and that has dragged the entire team down to only 31.3 percent. But as poorly as the Rebels have shot from beyond the arc, they are still outscoring the opposition by more than 10 ppg on average.

Aside from the meetings with New Mexico, this is probably the toughest in conference play for the Cougars this season. Everything will depend on the perimeter shooting by both sides and chances are BYU will have the edge in that area.
