GAME NOTES: The Cornell Big Red will try to remain perfect in Ivy League play when they host the Brown Bears this evening at Newman Arena.
Friday night the Bears were no match for Columbia, as the Lions defeated Brown, 65-54. It was the fourth straight loss for Brown and the eighth setback in the last 10 games for the Bears, who are now 1-4 in conference action.
As for the Big Red, they posted their seventh straight victory Friday night by pounding Yale, 90-71. With the recent win, the Big Red remain perfect in league play at 5-0 and also bumped their home ledger to 8-1.
The Big Red have won the last six games against Brown, and own a comfortable 67-46 advantage in the all-time series.
The Bears took a nine point lead into halftime against Columbia on Friday night, but the blew that lead and eventually the game by shooting 25.0 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes. The Bears shot 41.5 percent from the floor overall, but made just 13-of-23 attempts from the foul line and committed 16 turnovers. Matt Mullery led the way in the setback with 17 points, while Peter Sullivan and Matt Sullivan posted 11 and 10 points, respectively. Mullery has been the top player throughout most of the season for Brown, pacing the team with 15.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg. However, there isn't much scoring support, with the team averaging a lackluster 66.1 ppg.
The Big Red have a variety of different options on the floor, which is why the team is producing a healthy 76.8 ppg, behind an equally impressive 47.1 percent shooting effort. Ryan Wittman is currently pacing the team with 17.4 ppg on the season, while Jeff Foote is contributing 12.5 ppg, to go along with a team-best 8.6 rpg. On Friday night, the Big Red opened the game against Yale with a 23-9 run and never looked back, en route to a 19-point victory. Cornell shot 47.8 percent from the field, and finished 13-of-27 from behind the arc. Jon Jaques led the way in the win with 17 points, while Foote added a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Wittman and Louis Dale also tallied 15 points apiece in the win.
Cornell has been like a Big Red machine on the season and there are no signs of this team slowing down anytime soon.
