GAME NOTES: A Southern Conference rematch is on tap when the Chattanooga Mocs head to Charleston to take on The Citadel Bulldogs.
Chattanooga fell on the road against the College of Charleston by a count of 86-74 on Thursday. It was the Mocs' fifth loss in their last seven starts and dropped them to 13-11 overall and 5-6 in the conference's North Division. Chattanooga is just 2-7 on the road.
The Citadel squeaked by Samford 61-57 at McAlister Field House on Thursday in its last start. The Bulldogs have split their last four games and stand at 11-12 overall, and 5-6 in the SoCon's South Division.
The teams met on January 14th in Chattanooga with the Mocs prevailing 56-54. Chattanooga has won the last 11 meetings between the two schools and holds a 53-13 lead in the series
DeAntre Jefferson paced Chattanooga on Thursday with 13 points and seven rebounds. Ricky Taylor finished with 12 points and Ty Patterson 11. The Mocs trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half and were down 43-24 at the break. They trailed by as many as 29 early in the second half before eventually getting within 10 with less than nine minutes left. Patterson is the leading scorer on the ballclub at 15.3 ppg, which puts him sixth in the conference. He's shooting 42.6 percent from the floor, but just 64.3 percent from the foul line. Taylor is averaging 11.0 ppg. despite shooting 38.0 percent from the floor. Ridge McKeither is the leading rebounder at 5.8 boards per contest, while Keegan Bell is dealing out 4.6 apg, ranking third in the conference in that category. The Mocs are shooting 43.4 percent from the floor as a team, but just 62.6 percent from the line. They're scoring 70.2 ppg., while giving up 70.7.
Austin Dahn scored 15 points to lead the Bulldogs in the win over Samford. Harrison DuPont added 13 points while Bryan Streeter and Cameron Wells grabbed eight rebounds each. The Citadel trailed by 11 with 10:27 left in regulation, but rallied to take a 54-53 lead with 2:41 left and never trailed again. Wells is third in the conference in scoring at 18.0 ppg, hitting 42.9 percent from the floor and 86.4 percent from the foul line. He's also the team's leading rebounder at 5.2 rpg. and is fifth in the conference in assists. Zach Urbanus is next on the scoring list at 10.4 ppg. The Bulldogs are shooting 40.9 percent from the floor as a team and averaging just 60.0 points per game. They're taking good care of the basketball, averaging just 11.3 turnovers per game. Defensively, they've been sharp, surrendering just 58.9 points per contest.
If the Bulldogs play good defense, the end of their losing streak against the Mocs is at hand.
