GAME NOTES: The Virginia Tech Hokies put their unblemished home record on the line when they host the Clemson Tigers in an ACC bout today at Cassell Coliseum.
Virginia Tech improved to 11-0 at home this season following Thursday's 74-70 triumph over North Carolina. The win was the Hokies' fourth in their last five games. Next up, they'll travel to NC State to face the Wolfpack on Wednesday night.
Clemson has been idle since last Saturday's 62-53 victory over Maryland. The win snapped a three-game slide and kept the Tigers in the thick of the ACC standings at 4-4. After this contest they'll return home for three straight, beginning with Wednesday's clash with Florida State.
Clemson has won three straight meetings in Blacksburg, although Virginia Tech still holds an 11-10 edge in the all-time series. Since the Hokies joined the ACC, all eight meetings have been decided by five points or less.
Clemson center Jerai Grant tallied a career-high 18 points and 12 rebounds in last weekend's win over Maryland. The Tigers won the game despite shooting an ugly 31.9 percent from the floor, as they held the Terrapins to 34.6 percent. The teams combined for an eye-gouging 47 turnovers, though Clemson held a key 20-8 edge on the offensive glass. Trevor Booker also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 16 boards in the win, while Andre Young tallied 12 points and seven steals. Booker hasn't missed a start all season, and he leads the squad with 15.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per tilt. Second-leading scorer Demontez Stitt (11.2 ppg) has been battling a sprained right foot, though the team is hopeful he will be back in the lineup this weekend. He has missed the last two contests, snapping a streak of 52 consecutive starts.
Despite shooting just 35.3 percent from the floor in the first half of Thursday's game against North Carolina, the Hokies led by as many as 12 points in the frame. After surrendering that lead early in the second half, Tech reclaimed it for good on a jumper by Malcolm Delaney with just under 15 minutes to play. Delaney finished with a team-high 21 points for the Hokies, while Dorenzo Hudson scored 17 and Jeff Allen finished with 14. Allen also contributed seven rebounds and four steals. While they weren't particularly effective from the field, the Hokies were able to convert 18-of-22 free throws for the game. Delaney has made a habit of getting to the foul line and maximizing his opportunities, having sank 127-of-149 (.852) attempts on the season. He is averaging a team-best 19.8 ppg, while Hudson is scoring 13.7 ppg, and Allen produces 11.3 points and a team-high 7.6 caroms per contest.
The Tigers have had some success in their last few trips to Blacksburg, but this year's VaTech squad doesn't seem to have any intention of losing on its home floor.
