GAME NOTES: The Duquesne Dukes and George Washington Colonials are slated to do battle in Atlantic 10 Conference play this afternoon.
Two of the last three outings for Duquesne have resulted in defeat, including Wednesday's 76-60 setback to nationally-ranked Temple. With that loss, the Dukes dropped to 1-8 in true road games, and they are now 2-6 in conference. The club is 11-11 overall, but many of its victories have come over weak non- conference opponents such as Arkansas-Monticello, Binghamton and Savannah State.
George Washington's 12-9 overall record is solid, but the team is just 2-6 against A-10 competition and has fallen apart lately. The Colonials have lost two consecutive outings and six of the last seven, and the most recent defeat occurred on Wednesday at Charlotte in a 72-68 final.
The Colonials own a 42-25 series advantage over the Dukes, and this game marks the only scheduled meeting of the season between the clubs.
While Duquesne's A-10 record is disappointing and its overall mark is mediocre, there is a significant amount of talent in the lineup. The Dukes are getting 14.5 ppg from Damian Saunders, who is also ripping down 12.2 rpg to go along with 73 blocks and 61 steals. Bill Clark provides 13.1 ppg, but his 37.6 percent shooting from the floor needs to be improved. Melquan Bolding is netting 11.9 ppg, while Eric Evans and B.J. Monteiro are both averaging 10.5 ppg. Duquesne is scoring 66.8 ppg while allowing a similar 66.1 ppg to opponents. On Wednesday, both Evans and Clark scored 12 points apiece for the Dukes, who were outrebounded 35-19 by Temple. Duquesne struggled at the defensive end of the court, permitting the Owls to make good on 57.1 percent of their field goal attempts.
Damian Hollis is scoring 14.1 ppg this season for George Washington, while is receiving 10.9 ppg from its only other double-digit scorer, Lasan Kromah. The Colonials are posting 70.8 ppg through 21 contests, and they are limiting opponents to 67.4 ppg on 40.8 percent shooting. Clearly, however, the positive differential should be credited to the squad's play against non-conference foes, not league opponents. Hollis scored 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor against Charlotte on Wednesday, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Kromah added 11 points for the Colonials, who connected on only 39.7 percent of their field goal attempts as a team. Defensively, they permitted the 49ers to shoot 49 percent from the floor.
While GW has the obvious advantage of playing at home tonight, the edge has to go to Duquesne, which is simply the more talented team. Keep an eye on Saunders, as he can do it all.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
