GAME NOTES: The Furman Paladins will be looking to get back on the winning side of the ledger when they host the Elon Phoenix in a Southern Conference matchup at Timmons Arena.
Elon comes into this game off a 72-56 setback at Wofford on Wednesday. It was the 11th loss for the Phoenix in their last 12 starts. Elon is now 4-17 overall and 2-8 in the conference. The Phoenix have had real problems on the road this year, where they are a meager 2-10.
Furman was a 72-64 come-from-behind winner at UNC Greensboro on Thursday. The Paladins have evenly split their last six games to stand at 11-11 overall and 5-6 in the SoCon. They're 7-3 this season at Timmons Arena.
Furman was a 53-48 winner at Elon on January 7th, but the Phoenix still lead the series 6-3.
Adam Constantine scored 17 points to lead the way for Elon on Wednesday, while T.J. Douglas and Terrance Birdette added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Drew Spradlin is the leading scorer on the ballclub at 13.0 ppg. He's hitting 42.7 percent from the floor, but just 36.8 percent from outside the arc. Constantine is scoring in double figures at 11.0 ppg, but hasn't attempted a three-pointer all year and is shooting just 57.0 percent from the foul line. He's also averaging 7.8 boards per game, good for fourth in the conference. Chris Long is dealing out 3.4 assists per game, while hitting 83.4 percent from the stripe. The Phoenix is shooting just 39.9 percent from the floor and only 30.1 percent from outside the arc. The result is just 63.3 ppg, compared to 72.4 ppg for the opposition.
Amu Saaka scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Furman rallied for the win on Thursday. Jordan Miller added 17 points and seven rebounds. Justin Dehm added 12 points. Furman overcame a 17-point first-half deficit to pick up the win. Saaka is averaging 16.0 ppg. and 7.1 rebounds per contest. He leads the Paladins in both categories and stands fifth in the conference in scoring and fourth in rebounding. Miller is averaging 14.4 ppg, which puts him eighth in the conference in scoring. Darryl Evans leads the team in assists at 3.0 apg. Furman is hitting 41.4 percent from the floor as a team and a solid 73.5 percent from the foul line. The Paladins are averaging the same number of points they allow; 69.2
Furman should have little trouble getting over the .500 mark for the first time since January 16th, as Elon should pose little threat in this one.
