GAME NOTES: The George Mason Patriots battle the elements to reach the Daskalakis Center in Philadelphia this afternoon where they will contend with fellow Colonial Athletic Association member Drexel.
The Patriots enter the weekend as one of three teams tied for the top spot in the CAA standings with a record of 10-2, matching the efforts of both Old Dominion and Northeastern at the moment. George Mason had been riding high on a seven-game win streak until this week's meeting with Georgia State on the road on Wednesday night, an encounter that resulted in a 61-57 setback.
As for the Dragons, currently tied with VCU for fourth place in the league at 8-4, they too played earlier in the week, but in their case they picked up a 97-55 pounding of Towson at home on Tuesday night. The victory was the fourth in the last five games for Drexel.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Patriots hold an 11-5 edge.
The Patriots were trying to win their fourth straight road game for the first time in two decades earlier this week, but they ran into a Georgia State squad that wasn't about to let that happen. Coming up with 13 points and eight rebounds was Ryan Pearson, Luke Hancock added 10 points and both Andre Cornelius and Isaiah Tate logged eight points in the losing effort. Leading scorer Cam Long, who had averaged better than 20 ppg over the previous five outings was held to just two points on 1-of-9 shooting from the floor. Long remains the top scorer for the program with his 13.1 ppg and is also first in the passing department for the group with his 71 assists over the course of 23 starts. Pearson checks in with 12.1 ppg and a team-best 6.9 rpg, but still the Patriots are posting just 66.7 ppg. Then again, because the defense has held opponents to a mere 65.3 ppg, things seem to be working out just fine for George Mason at the moment.
Drexel trailed by a point early in the first half against the Tigers, but from there the meeting belonged to the Dragons as they ended up with the lopsided 42-point win at home. Chris Fouch tallied a game-high 28 points, shooting 6- of-7 behind the three-point line and 8-of-11 at the charity stripe in only 23 minutes of action. Derrick Thomas added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists as the only other double-digit scorer for a team that pulled the starters once it became clear that it was going to become and easy win. Fouch, who is second on the team in scoring with 10.7 ppg, has done all of his damage coming off the bench this season. Even though he is shooting just 41.7 percent from the floor, Fouch has found a way to connected on 54-of-133 (.406) out on the perimeter. Jamie Harris maintains his spot at the top of the scoring list with his 14.3 ppg and he is also first with 85 assists, and yet the Dragons are still just scoring 63.5 ppg.
Even though Georgia State showed the Dragons how to beat George Mason, chances are the Patriots are going to guard against a second straight setback with so much riding on these last few regular-season outings.
