GAME NOTES: The Davidson Wildcats will look to continue their recent hot streak when the host the Georgia Southern Eagles Saturday night at Belk Arena in a Southern Conference South Division clash.
Georgia Southern was an 83-68 loser at Western Carolina on Thursday. The Eagles have dropped five of their last seven starts. Georgia Southern now stands at 6-18 overall and 3-8 in conference play, which puts them last in the South Division. The Eagles are winless in 13 road games.
Davidson had to go to overtime to prevail 67-63 over The Citadel last Saturday at Belk Arena. It was the Wildcats' third straight win. Davidson is 11-11 overall and stands third in the division with a 6-4 conference mark.
This will be the second meeting between these teams in just two weeks. Davidson won the first matchup, 91-87 on January 23rd. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 21-6.
Cory Wohlleb scored a career-high 22 points for the Eagles on Thursday. Rory Spencer added 11 points, nine rebounds and five blocks, while Willie Powers and Ben Drayton added 11 points each. Western Carolina took control of the game in the first half, shooting 52.8 percent from the floor to take a 42-31 lead at the break. The Catamounts broke the game open by shooting 16-of-32 in the second half. They also outrebounded the Eagles 48-26. Powers is the leading scorer on the Georgia Southern roster, averaging 14.6 ppg, hitting an even 44.0 percent from the floor. Powers is also leading the conference at 5.0 apg. Antonio Hanson is next on the scoring list at 12.2 ppg, while hitting 40.5 percent from long range. Johntavius Rucker is the leading rebounder on the roster at 4.8 boards per contest. The Eagles are shooting 41.8 percent from the floor, while averaging 67.8 ppg. However, they are allowing an alarming 77.0.
Jake Cohen scored 18 points, four of them in overtime, to give Davidson its win over The Citadel. Brendan McKillop added 17 points, six of them in the extra period. Steve Rossiter added 10 points, while Cohen and Will Archambault had eight rebounds apiece. Cohen is the leading scorer on the ballclub at 12.6 ppg, hitting 48.0 percent from the floor. J.P. Kuhlman is averaging 12.3 ppg, while hitting 46.1 percent from long range. He also leads the team in assists at 3.5 apg. Archambault is at 11.6 ppg, while McKillop is also in double figures at 10.4 points per contest. Rossiter is the team's leading rebounder at 6.3 rpg. The Wildcats are hitting 43.4 percent from the floor as a team and averaging 72.0 ppg. Defensively, they're allowing 68.6 points per contest.
Having a week off in the midst of the conference race will have Davidson refreshed for the stretch run.
