GAME NOTES: Two of the three teams tied for last place in the Western Athletic Conference standings meet in Boise tonight, as the Broncos entertain in-state foe Idaho at Taco Bell Arena.
Things are looking up somewhat for the Broncos, seeing as how they lost their first seven conference games of the season but have now won back-to-back outings. Last weekend, the team topped Fresno State at home rather easily in a 65-49 decision.
As for the Vandals, who are also showing a 2-7 WAC mark, they too had a two- game win streak recently but had theirs snapped on Wednesday night in an 80-62 loss to Utah State on the road. With the setback, Idaho is now just 4-7 on the road as it heads down the stretch.
A three-pointer by Anthony Thomas sent the first meeting of the season into overtime between these two squads, eventually leading to a 77-67 win for the Broncos on the road. As a result, BSU now leads the all-time series by a count of 47-34.
Idaho knocked down an impressive 60 percent from the field in the second half of its meeting with the Aggies earlier in the week, but that was only after the squad converted a mere 36 percent in the first half, making it that much harder to fight back. Marvin Jefferson accounted for 17 points and six rebounds, followed by Kyle Barone and Kashif Watson with 14 and 11 points, respectively. In the last four games, the Vandals have had a different leading scorer each time and while Mac Hopson leads the group overall with his 14.7 ppg and has also delivered on 94 assists, he was not available for the Vandals against USU due to a one-game suspension. Even with Hopson's return, the Vandals will still need players like Steffan Johnson (11.1 ppg) and Watson (11.0 ppg) to bring even more to the offense to ensure that Idaho is competitive tonight.
Against the Bulldogs last weekend, Boise State had the luxury of not having to deal with Fresno State's top player in Paul George who was out with an injury. As a result, FSU's offense stalled and stumbled to a mere 49 points and an awful 1-of-15 shooting from three-point range, not to mention 25 turnovers. Kurt Cunningham and Daequon Montreal each tallied 13 points for the home team and Paul Noonan another 12 points and six boards off the bench. Ike Okoye, who finished with eight points last weekend, remains the top scorer for the program with his 13.1 ppg and is also the leader on the glass with close to nine rebounds per outing. Robert Arnold and La'Shard Anderson account for 11.2 and 11.0 ppg, respectively, but as the meeting with the Bulldogs showed, there are several players on the roster who can step up and provide the Broncos with the jolt they need these days.
As long as Hopson is back in the lineup for the Vandals they will certainly have a fighting chance in this meeting and considering BSU needed some heroics to pull off the win in the last encounter, expect Idaho to put up a serious fight on the road.
