GAME NOTES: The Jacksonville State Gamecocks visit the Eastern Kentucky Colonels for an Ohio Valley Conference clash tonight at McBrayer Arena.
Jacksonville State is hoping to get back to .500 in conference play after being blown out by rival Morehead State, 94-75, on Thursday night. Prior to that defeat, the Gamecocks were winners of 4-of-5 games, the only loss coming by two points in overtime.
Eastern Kentucky is coming off of a convincing 76-58 victory over Tennessee Tech at home on Thursday night. That win marks the Colonels' second straight after being losers of two in a row. EKU has come out victorious in six of its last eight battles, all but one against a conference opponent (Chicago State).
Jacksonville State leads the series between these two teams, 7-5, including a 68-65 home victory over Eastern Kentucky almost a month ago. Stephan Hall posted 18 points in the win, while team scoring leader Trenton Marshall dropped in 17. The Colonels received a game-high 20 points from Justin Stommes, as well as a 15-point contribution from Spencer Perrin in the losing effort.
Justin Stommes leads the way for Eastern Kentucky on the season, dropping in 15.0 ppg. He is followed by Josh Taylor (13.3 ppg) and Papa Oppong (11.7 ppg). The Colonels are accustomed to out-scoring their opponents, posting 72.2 ppg while shooting 48.1 percent from the floor. Their foes average 65.8 ppg behind 45.8 percent shooting. Oppong scored 19 points in Thursday's 76-58 victory over Tennessee Tech, helping the team to a dominant 12-1 record at home. Josh Daniel and Justin Stommes also provided double-figure scoring efforts, netting 17 and 12 points, respectively. The Colonels were on fire from beyond the arc, connecting on 13-of-27 three-point attempts.
Nick Murphy's double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds wasn't enough for Jacksonville State on Thursday night against Morehead State as the Gamecocks fell to the Eagles in a 94-75 final, marking the team's seventh road loss of the season. Jeremy Bynum added 15 points, while Dominique Shellman dropped in 14. Trenton Marshall sunk 10 points in the loss. JSU shoots 44.8 percent from the floor on the year, while holding its opponents to 42.6 percent. The Gamecocks average 72.0 points per contest, led by Marshall's 18.2 ppg. Nick Murphy contributes 14.0 ppg, with Jeremy Bynum rounding out the double-digit scorers with his 10.8 ppg.
The Colonels don't allow their opponents to leave Richmond with a win very often, and with Jacksonville State's poor road record, this one has the makings of an easy win.
