GAME NOTES: The fourth-ranked Kentucky Wildcats take their act on the road this afternoon, as they battle the LSU Tigers in SEC action from the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge.
The Wildcats have won two straight games following their lone loss of the season at South Carolina on January 26th. With wins over nationally-ranked teams in Vanderbilt (85-72) and Ole Miss (85-75) since, UK has gotten some of its swagger back, moving to 6-1 in conference play, good for a tie with Vanderbilt atop the SEC East.
The Tigers are at the opposite end of the SEC spectrum as the only team without a league win (0-8). The team hasn't won a game since January 4th against McNeese State and has dropped eight straight after a 59-54 setback to Tennessee on Thursday.
Kentucky holds a 78-24 advantage in the all-time series, but LSU won both meetings a season ago, including clinching the SEC title in Lexington last year.
John Calipari's Wildcats have really excelled at both ends of the floor this season and the results are an impressive +16.0 scoring margin. A plethora of weapons are present at the offensive end, leading to 82.4 ppg on .491 shooting. Freshman sensation John Wall is not only the top newcomer in the nation, but perhaps the top player overall, with the ability to both score (16.9 ppg) and distribute (6.8 apg) at will. Fellow freshman DeMarcus Cousins has been just as impressive in the low post, averaging a near double-double with 16.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. All-SEC forward Patrick Patterson (15.1 ppg, 7.6 rpg) provides a third deadly asset. The final piece to the puzzle is yet another stellar freshman in Eric Bledsoe (10.9 ppg, 73 assists). Cousins recorded his fifth straight double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the 10-point win over Ole Miss. Wall had a solid all-around game with 17 points and seven assists, while Patterson chipped in with 12. Kentucky shot 50 percent from the floor and .474 from three-point range (9-of-19) in the victory.
A lack of offense was once again the main culprit in LSU's loss to Tennessee this week. The team hit just six of its 25 shots in the first half and tallied a mere 16 points over the first 20 minutes. Not much got better after the break, with the team converting just 30.5 percent overall in the game. The loss spoiled a terrific performance by Bo Spencer, who erupted for almost half of LSU's scoring total with 25 points. Tasmin Mitchell was solid down low at 13 points and 17 rebounds, but the there was little support from the rest of the roster. The team as a whole is netting a mere 63.1 ppg on a miserable .411 shooting. Mitchell is one of the SEC's top frontcourt performers and leads the team with a near double-double of 17.6 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Spencer is next in line at 15.0 ppg, followed by Storm Warren's 12.4 ppg. Unfortunately, that is where the scoring stops for LSU, as Dennis Harris ranks fourth on the team with a meager 4.3 ppg.
The Tigers haven't won in league play yet and it isn't likely that the first SEC victory will come against the Wildcats this weekend.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
