GAME NOTES: The Huskies will try to break back into the win column this afternoon when Northern Illinois hosts the Miami-Ohio RedHawks in a Mid- American Conference clash at the NIU Convocation Center.
The RedHawks bumped their league ledger to 6-3 on the year with a 56-54 decision over Western Michigan in their last matchup. It was the third straight win for Miami-Ohio, and the sixth in the team's last eighth games.
The Huskies are in a terrible tailspin, as the team has dropped five consecutive games. The last time Northern Illinois was on the floor, it suffered a 90-76 setback to Akron. The loss to the Zips dropped Northern Illinois to just 4-5 in conference action.
Miami-Ohio has won the last five matchups against Northern Illinois, and now own a 23-12 edge over the Huskies in the all-time series. However, 11 of Northern Illinois' wins in the series have occurred at home.
Inconsistency has plagued the RedHawks throughout the season, as the team is producing just 62.0 ppg, behind a mediocre 42.6 percent shooting effort. Kenny Hayes is the only player currently averaging double figures for Miami-Ohio, posting 14.0 ppg, to go along with a team-best 3.1 apg. The last time Miami- Ohio was on the floor, the team only scored 56 points, but that was just enough for a victory over Western Michigan. Miami-Ohio shot just 36.7 percent from the floor in the matchup, but did connect on 15-of-19 attempts from the foul line. Hayes paced the team in the win with 16 points and five assists, while Antonio Ballard added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
During their five-game skid, the Huskies have proven to be ineffective at the defensive end of the floor, surrendering 88.2 ppg. The last time Northern Illinois was on the floor the team allowed 90 points in a loss to Akron. The poor play defensively overshadowed the team's solid efforts at the other end of the court, as Northern Illinois scored 76 points behind a 43.5 percent shooting effort. Xavier Silas led the way with 15 points in the loss, while Darion Anderson, Sean Kowal and Tony Nixon added 12 points apiece. On the season the team is being paced by Silas, who is averaging 19.9 ppg. However, the best all around player might be Anderson, who is netting 11.1 ppg, to go along with 6.8 rpg and 74 assists.
The Huskies have lost their way, but look for them to get back on track this afternoon against Miami-Ohio.
