GAME NOTES: Winners of nine straight at home and seven consecutive decisions overall, the Utah State Aggies try their luck against the Nevada Wolf Pack in a Western Athletic Conference battle at the D.G. Smith Spectrum in Logan tonight.
The Aggies were in action just three nights ago when they topped the short- handed Idaho Vandals rather easily, 80-62. It was the fifth straight double- digit win for the program and pushed USU to 7-2 in conference which, at this point, has the school tied with Louisiana Tech for first place in the league standings.
As for the Wolf Pack, currently fourth in the WAC with a record of 5-3, they posted a 66-60 home win against Hawaii last weekend at the Lawlor Events Center, the third win in four tries for the program. This is the first of back-to-back road games for Nevada with the team heading to Idaho in four days to face the Vandals.
The Aggies are ahead in the all-time series with Nevada by a count of 28-13, thanks to a 79-72 overtime triumph in Reno last month that marked the second straight win for USU over the Wolf Pack.
Luke Babbitt came up a rebound shy of yet another double-double for the Pack as he tallied a game-high 20 points in the win over Hawaii last weekend at home. Babbitt finished the night shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line for a team that closed out the contest hitting 10 straight at the stripe to seal the deal. Brandon Fields added 16 points and Joey Shaw 11 as the team got by with a mere six points from the reserves. In conference play, Babbitt has simply been a beast with his 24.1 ppg and 10.5 rpg, numbers that are made all the more remarkable when you consider that he has also converted a staggering 10-of-21 behind the three-point line. Fields checks in with 15.4 ppg and Armon Johnson 13.8 ppg and a team-best 52 assists, against only 25 turnovers, in those eight conference matchups. Even though the team is scoring less in conference play (77.9 ppg) than they are overall (81.0 ppg) on the season, there's always that potential for a breakout game.
Against the Vandals on Wednesday night, Utah State shot an incredible 68.2 percent from the field in the first half, including 5-of-7 behind the three- point line, to take a commanding lead and then cruise to the easy victory at home. Brian Green came off the bench to convert a perfect 4-of-4 behind the three-point line to post his team-best 16 points, while Nate Bendall made all six of his field goal attempts as he finished with 14 points, followed by Tai Wesley with 13 points and both Pooh Williams and Jared Quayle with 11 apiece. Over the course of nine conference games, the Aggies have shot a staggering 51.1 percent from the floor and an even more impressive 45.5 percent behind the three-point line, all of which has allowed the program to register a 13.7 ppg scoring margin over the rest of the league. Wesley is tops in both scoring (11.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg) in conference action, but really the point production is a balanced collective with Quayle (11.2 ppg) and Green (10.3 ppg) along for the ride.
Considering the first meeting of the season between the schools went to overtime, this could easily have the same sort of conclusion. However, beating Utah State at home is never an easy trick, so again the Pack will have their hands full.
