GAME NOTES: The Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are slated to do battle this afternoon in a Big 12 Conference affair from United Spirit Arena in Lubbock.
Oklahoma State was most recently in action on Monday when it fell to Texas by a 72-60 final in front of the disappointed home crowd. That loss was the second in a row for the Cowboys, who dropped to 16-6 overall and 4-4 in league play. They enter today's affair with a 2-4 record in true road games, not exactly a reason for confidence.
Texas Tech has lost back-to-back games to fall to 14-7 overall and 2-5 in conference. The Red Raiders dropped an 85-70 decision to Texas A&M last Saturday to fall to 2-6 in true road games. Still, the fact that Tech is 12-1 at home is impressive.
The Cowboys own a 32-13 series advantage over the Red Raiders, which includes an 81-52 romp over Tech in the first meeting this season.
James Anderson was unstoppable for Oklahoma State against Texas on Monday, as he scored 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor. Obi Muonelo pitched in 12 points, and Matt Pilgrim finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Unfortunately, the Cowboys forced only five turnovers in that clash and permitted the Longhorns to shoot 50.8 percent from the floor. OSU attempted 18 three-pointers, but only four hit the mark. Through 22 games, Anderson is scoring 22.8 ppg and is clearly one of the elite players in the Big 12. Muonelo checks in with 12.7 ppg, and Marshall Moses provides 10.4 ppg and 9.8 rpg. The Cowboys are generating 74.2 ppg while limiting opponents to 66.2 ppg on 41.4 percent field goal accuracy.
Mike Singletary is the leading scorer for Texas Tech this season with 15.4 ppg, and he is pulling down 6.7 rpg. John Roberson checks in with 14.2 ppg, and he has dished out 120 assists, more than double the amount of turnovers that he has committed. Rounding out a trio of double-digit scorers is David Tairu with 10.8 ppg. The Red Raiders are netting 77.9 ppg while allowing 74.7 ppg to opponents. In the 15-point loss last weekend to Texas A&M, Tech shot 52.8 percent from the floor, but a 37-29 rebounding disadvantage and a 21-8 deficit in points from the foul line hurt the cause. Tairu scored 13 points in the setback, while Singletary added 11 points. Nick Okorie posted 10 points, and Roberson handed out 12 assists against only four turnovers.
The road team gets the nod in this contest, as Anderson will clearly be the best player on the floor. NBA scouts will watch the Oklahoma State standout shine as usual.
