GAME NOTES: The Saint Louis Billikens visit Tom Gola Arena in snow-covered Philadelphia to tangle with the La Salle Explorers in an Atlantic 10 Conference clash.
Saint Louis has had its struggles away from home this season, posting a 1-7 mark outside of its own building. After losing two straight on the road, the Billikens returned home this past Wednesday and posted a 67-65 victory over St. Bonaventure. They'll stay in Philly following this tilt to take on Saint Joseph's on Tuesday night.
La Salle has dropped two straight and three of its last four contests. On Tuesday night, the Explorers were dealt a 90-83 loss by Rhode Island. After this bout, they'll be idle until next Sunday when they head across the state to take on Duquesne.
Saint Louis won Wednesday night's game on a last-second layup by Kwamain Mitchell, avoiding what could have been a crushing loss. The Billikens grabbed their largest lead at 11 with only 6:43 to play, but the Bonnies chipped away and eventually tied the score at 65-65 on a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining. In addition to his game-winner, Mitchell finished with 17 points and three steals to pace the Billikens, while Willie Reed (11 rebounds) and Jon Smith each scored 11. As a team, Saint Louis shot a healthy 52.9 percent from the floor. It marked the 15th consecutive game that Mitchell reached double figures, and he is averaging 15.8 ppg on the year. Reed is shooting 54.3 percent from the floor and is tallying 12.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest, while Cody Ellis is averaging 11.1 points and 6.4 boards per tilt.
La Salle is led by Rodney Green, who ranks second in the A-10 with 18.5 ppg. He is also pulling down 5.3 rebounds per outing. His elevated play has helped fill some of the void created by a couple of key injuries. Second-leading scorer Kimmani Barrett (13.3 ppg) had started the first 15 games of the season, but he had season-ending foot surgery a week ago. Ruben Guillandeaux (9.5 ppg) was also expected to be a key contributor but his season was cut short after just four games when he broke his right foot. In the wake of those injuries, Aaric Murray has stepped up and is averaging 12.8 points and a team- best 6.9 rebounds per game as a freshman. Yves Mekongo has also been productive with 11.1 ppg and 5.5 rpg. The Explorers do boast a +5.6 rebounding margin, which ranks second in the league. However, they were done in by 19 turnovers in Tuesday's loss to Rhode Island. Green led the way with 22 points and 12 boards in a losing effort.
Despite their injuries, the Explorers continue to chug along. Meanwhile, the Billikens struggled to close out Wednesday's game at home, and they've fared miserably on the road all year long.
