GAME NOTES: The 15th-ranked New Mexico Lobos seek revenge for one of their three losses this season as they entertain the San Diego State Aztecs in a Mountain West Conference showdown in The Pit.
The Lobos, who are currently 6-2 in league play, have fought their way back into the AP Poll by winning six straight games, during which UNM took down the BYU Cougars with a 76-72 decision last week. Most recently, the Lobos played last Saturday at TCU and used that opportunity to register a 73-57 beating of the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth.
As for the Aztecs, after having their lengthy home win streak snapped by BYU back on January 23rd, the squad posted back-to-back victories over the likes of Colorado State on the road and, most recently, Air Force on Tuesday night by a score of 70-48 at Viejas Arena. In picking up their 25th home win in the last 27 opportunities, the Aztecs advanced to 5-3 in conference play as well.
New Mexico leads the series with the Aztecs by a count of 37-28 entering today's meeting, but the last time UNM was ranked 15th in the nation it was SDSU that dropped a 74-64 decision on the Lobos in Southern California last month. In that meeting, Malcolm Thomas erupted for 18 points and 15 rebounds for the home team.
The San Diego State defense came ready to play on Tuesday as they limited the Falcons to a mere 17 first-half points, en route to the 22-point victory at home. Kawhi Leonard tallied 15 points to lead four players in double figures for the Aztecs, while Malcolm Thomas registered a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while reserves Kelvin Davis and Tyrone Shelley scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Aztecs are scoring a modest 70.7 ppg this season, but what makes them so dangerous is the fact that not a single player is averaging even 12 ppg at the moment, which means any number of guys can take the scoring lead and run with it from one game to the next. Leonard is responsible for 11.9 ppg and is tops on the glass with 9.5 rpg, followed by Thomas with his 10.8 ppg and 8.3 rpg. With those two hitting the glass time and time again, it should come as no surprise that the Aztecs are leading opponents by almost eight rebounds per game this season.
Darington Hobson bounced back from a weak effort against BYU a few days earlier when he shot just 1-of-11 from the floor, to post a team-best 19 points in the win over TCU last weekend. Phillip McDonald added 18 points and Roman Martinez 16 as all three players combined to clear 20 rebounds along the way as well. Hobson, who suffered with five turnovers, added to his stat line with six assists, five steals and a pair of blocked shots. Over the course of 14 home games this season the Lobos have outscored the competition by almost 15 ppg, having limited those program to just 39.3 percent shooting from the floor and 30.1 percent behind the three-point line. Over the course of those 14 appearances inside The Pit, Hobson has stepped up with not only 15.6 ppg to lead the group, but also 8.9 rpg and 59 assists as well. Martinez (13.4 ppg) has found the surroundings rather comfortable as well, allowing him to convert 44.6 percent of his three-point tries in the building.
In what should be another thrilling game, expect to see Hobson on display for the Lobos as he leads the home team to victory.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
