Santa Clara (9-16) at San Diego (9-15)

GAME NOTES: The Santa Clara Broncos try to snap a three-game slide tonight as they tangle with the San Diego Toreros in West Coast Conference action at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Santa Clara bowed to Saint Mary's-CA on the road by a final of 74-62 on Thursday night. The defeat dropped the team to a mere 1-7 in conference and was SCU's eighth defeat in the last nine games. In fact, victories have been so hard to come by that the Broncos have just two since four days before Christmas.

Meanwhile, the Toreros dropped to 2-6 in league play on Thursday night when they suffered a 72-70 overtime loss to San Francisco at home. The setback was the sixth in the last seven games for the program, with the lone win during that stretch coming in the form of a 66-44 victory versus Pepperdine on the road last Saturday.

San Diego kicked off its WCC slate with a 55-46 win over the Broncos back on January 8th, yet it is Santa Clara that owns a 36-30 advantage in the all-time series.

Marc Trasolini registered 18 points and Robert Smith had 16 on Thursday night, but no one else on the roster was able to come up with more than six points as the Broncos fell to Saint Mary's on the road. Santa Clara had a hard time slowing down SMC's Omar Samhan who came dangerously close to a triple-double with his 22 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocked shots in the decision. Trasolini is the active leader in both scoring and rebounding for the program with his 14.1 ppg and 6.1 rpg, while Smith contributes another 12.4 ppg to the attack for a Santa Clara group that has been trying to survive without Kevin Foster who was the leading scorer for the squad with his 19.8 ppg before suffering a broken right foot in early December.

San Diego should have had control of the meeting with the Dons a couple nights ago, having shot 54.2 percent from the field and 6-of-11 behind the three- point line in the first half, but the Toreros ended up going to overtime before losing by a bucket. Brandon Johnson, who is closing in on the school's all-time scoring mark, put up a game-high 25 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the floor, while Chris Lewis tacked on 13 points and clear eight rebounds. Johnson, who is already the team's career leader in assists with 501, needs only 11 more points to take over the program's all-time scoring lead which would make him the only player in the WCC to hold both marks for his school. Johnson is first on the team in scoring this season with his 15.0 ppg, even though he is shooting a feeble 36 percent from the floor. De'Jon Jackson checks in with 12.0 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer for a squad posting just 63.8 ppg.

Johnson can obviously put up points for the Toreros, but there are times that his production comes at a price, although tonight is not one of those times.
