GAME NOTES: The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles hope to get back into the win column as they travel to Clarksville to take on the Morehead State Eagles in an Ohio Valley Conference showdown at Ellis T. Johnson Arena.
Morehead State easily handled Jacksonville State on Thursday night, winning 94-75 to get the Eagles back on the winning side of things. They won 11 straight games before losing at Austin Peay a week ago.
The Golden Eagles hope to move above the .500 mark in conference after falling to Eastern Kentucky, 76-58, on the road on Thursday night. Prior to that loss, Tennessee Tech had been riding a four-game win streak, all against OVC opponents.
Morehead State has the upper hand in the all-time series, 68-61. The Eagles were victorious over Tennessee Tech in the last meeting on January 7th by a final score of 77-64. Kenneth Faried was Morehead State's leader, scoring 20 points while grabbing 14 rebounds. Elijah Muhammed scored 16 points and Kevin Murphy added 15 for Tennessee Tech in the setback.
Morehead State had an offensive explosion in its last game against Jacksonville State. The Eagles scored 94 points, and Maze Stallworth was one of two Eagles to post a double-double on the evening, scoring a game-high 26 points while tearing down 11 rebounds. Faried contributed 12 points to go along with 11 boards of his own. Demonte Harper netted 18 points coming off the bench, while Steve Peterson added 10 points of his own. The Eagles shot a solid 53.2 percent from the floor in the win, improving on their season output of 43.8 percent. The team outscores its opponents by almost 10 points on average, netting 70.2 ppg to 62.3 ppg. Faried leads the club in both scoring and rebounding this season, averaging a double-double of 16.8 points and 13.6 caroms per contest.
Three Tennessee Tech players are averaging double figures in scoring this season. Kevin Murphy leads the squad with 15.2 ppg, while Frank Davis adds 14.3 ppg and Elijah Muhammed nets 12.0 ppg. The Golden Eagles are being outscored by their opponent on average, letting up 76.7 ppg while netting 75.6 ppg. The team could only muster 58 points in the 18-point loss to conference foe Eastern Kentucky on Thursday night. The Golden Eagles only had 10 field goals in the first half, setting up a 39-23 deficit at the break. They were unable to mount a comeback after that, receiving 16 points from Kevin Murphy, as well as 14 from Elijah Muhammed. The loss put Tennessee Tech back at .500 (6-6) in conference play on the season, and made its road record stand at 5-7.
Faried is the most talented played in this contest, and if he continues producing the way he has all year long, expect Morehead State to take care of Tennessee Tech without much fuss.
