GAME NOTES: The Cal State Fullerton Titans will try to continue their strong play this evening when they host the UC Riverside Highlanders in a Big West Conference tussle at Titan Gym.
The Highlanders have struggled throughout most of the season, and come into this matchup stuck in a three-game slide. The most recent setback was a 63-47 loss to CS-Northridge, which dropped the Highlanders to just 2-8 in league play. It was the eighth loss in the last nine games for UCR, which is a mere 2-9 on the road this season.
As for the Titans, they are coming off a hard-fought, 81-75 overtime victory over Long Beach State. It was the third straight win for Fullerton, which is 5-4 in Big West play. The majority of success for the Titans has occurred at home where the team is 7-1.
In regard to the all-time series, the Titans have a 20-15 edge over UC Riverside, and that includes a 69-56 victory earlier this season.
The Highlanders put forth a lackluster effort in their last matchup, as the team shot just 30.0 percent from the field, en route to a 47-point performance in a loss to Northridge. Riverside made just 6-of-22 shots from long range, and connected on only 11-of-20 attempts from the foul line. Kyle Austin led the way in the loss with 17 points, while Larry Gurganious tallied a double- double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Scoring has been a major problem for the Highlanders this season, as the team is netting just 61.7 ppg, behind a pedestrian 41.3 percent shooting effort. Austin is the only player averaging double figures thus far, as the forward is pacing the squad with 16.7 ppg and 6.6 rpg.
The Titans overcame 25 turnovers to grab a thrilling overtime victory over Long Beach State on Thursday. Fullerton shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the matchup and also made 8-of-21 attempts from behind the arc. Aaron Thompson scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Gerard Anderson posted 12 points and seven boards. Devon Peltier and Bryce Webster both contributed 11 points, while Webster also pulled down 12 rebounds. Thompson has been the best scoring threat on the floor this season, netting 11.7 ppg for Fullerton, which as a whole is averaging 73.7 ppg.
The Titans were not overly impressive in their last victory, but the team is slowly gaining momentum and should continue to build its confidence with a rather easy victory tonight.
