GAME NOTES: Still waiting for their first true road win of the season, the Wyoming Cowboys give it another shot tonight as they clash with the Colorado State Rams in a Mountain West Conference battle at Moby Arena.
Wyoming comes into the meeting with just one win in the last six games, that being an unlikely 75-69 triumph over Utah at home a few weeks back. Most recently the Pokes hosted UNLV on Wednesday night and suffered a 78-50 thrashing at the hands of the Runnin' Rebels. With that setback, the team's second straight, the Cowboys fell to 2-6 in the MWC.
As for the Rams, they too just defeated the Runnin' Utes, using a 65-50 decision earlier this week to log their second win in the last three outings. CSU is currently in the middle of the pack in the MWC standings with a record of 4-4.
In this second installment of the Border War for 2009-10, the Cowboys enter with a commanding 128-82 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 1910. However, Colorado State won the first meeting this season with an 83-73 triumph in Laramie, thanks to Andy Ogide who tallied 22 points in the decision.
The starting five for the Cowboys did next to nothing to keep themselves relevant in their meeting with UNLV on Wednesday night, combining for a woeful 17 points on 4-of-25 shooting from the floor. Ryan Dermody came off the bench to tally 12 points and seven rebounds, while Desmar Jackson and Amath M'Baye tacked on 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the lopsided loss at home. The loss of leading scorer Afam Muojeke (16.8 ppg) to injury is something the Cowboys are going to struggle with from here on out because it leaves on Adam Waddell (10.5 ppg) and A.J. Davis (10.0 ppg) as the only two double-digit scorers at the moment. Djibril Thiam (9.8 ppg) always has the potential to put together a strong effort, but to expect all the parts to work in unison now is asking quite a bit from a fractured Wyoming group.
Against a short-handed Utah squad, the Rams took advantage as they powered their way inside for a 33-26 rebounding advantage and held the Utes to just three offensive boards in the 15-point decision in Salt Lake City. Andy Ogide patrolled the paint for 14 points and nine boards, followed by Travis Busch and Dorian Green with 13 points apiece as the Rams suffered a mere eight turnovers in the matchup. Ogide, the leading scorer in each of the last two games, is currently second on the overall list through 22 outings with his 11.4 ppg, trailing only Green who has used his free-throw shooting (89-of-106) to generate 13.0 ppg thus far. Although, while Green might lead the squad in assists with 49, his shooting from the field at only 33.9 percent still leaves a lot to be desired.
Without Muojeke the Cowboys will struggle just to remain competitive the rest of the way, which is why Wyoming will still be searching for its first true road win of the season even after this weekend.
