Canisius (11-13) at Saint Peter's (13-10)

GAME NOTES: The Canisius Golden Griffins try to halt a two-game slide today as they confront the Peacocks of Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference clash at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City.

In action two nights ago, Canisius was on the road that time as well and suffered a 66-54 setback against Niagara. With the defeat, the Griffs are now a game under .500 in league action at 6-7.

Meanwhile, the Peacocks suffered their second loss in the last three outings with a 59-46 defeat at the hands of the Fairfield Stags on Friday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Connecticut. The loss was just the second in the last eight games for a team that is now 8-5 in MAAC play.

The Peacocks won the first meeting of the season last month on the road with a 68-55 triumph as the visitors held Canisius to a mere 30.4 percent shooting from the field. As a result of that decision, the all-time series now favors the Griffs by a count of 35-27.

Tomas Vazquez-Simmons registered a double-double with his 10 points and team- best 11 rebounds, but he also turned the ball over five times for the Golden Griffins in their loss to Niagara on the road Friday night. Julius Coles accounted for a team-high 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting beyond the arc and Frank Turner 10 points and eight assists, to go along with five rebounds, but he and the Griffs could not overcome just 36.7 percent shooting from the floor and 21 turnovers. Turner leads the team in scoring with his 16.6 ppg and is easily tops in the passing department with 124 assists through 24 games. But his efforts don't stop there because he is also responsible for almost five rebounds per game and a team-high 53 steals, giving it his all at both ends of the floor. Coles responds with 15.2 ppg, which means the duo accounts for almost half of the unit's 65.9 ppg this season.

If the Peacocks thought they were having a rough time in the first half on Friday night when they sank just nine field goals, there's no way they were prepared for just seven baskets in the second half of the loss to Fairfield on the road. Ryan Bacon tallied a team-best 14 points, adding six rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots, while Nick Leon tacked on 10 points as he shot only 4-of-14 from the floor. Wesley Jenkins tallied seven points on a miserable 3-of-14 from the field before fouling out. Jenkins, who made just 1- of-7 chances behind the three-point line, is now shooting 33.3 percent beyond the arc for the season, en route to a team-best 13.8 ppg. Trailing him in the scoring department are Leon and Bacon with 12.8 and 10.3 ppg, respectively. Keeping this squad alive is a defense that is holding opponents to a mere 37.4 percent shooting from the floor and 59.5 ppg through 23 outings.

Sometimes a strong defense is all a team needs to get by, but as the Peacocks found out on Friday it also helps to have a capable offense, which is what Canisius is bringing to the table today.
