GAME NOTES: The Fresno State Bulldogs try to snap a two-game slide tonight as they pay a visit to the Hawaii Warriors for a Western Athletic Conference showdown at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Fresno State, which has been idle since last weekend, has actually dropped five of its last six games and part of that is because Paul George has been on the sideline with an injury. A week ago, the Bulldogs were also on the road, taking on Boise State in Idaho, a meeting that resulted in a 65-49 setback for the visitors. The loss also dropped FSU a game under .500 in league play at 4-5.
As for the Warriors, they've been taken down in four straight and six of their last seven outings, the lone victory being a narrow 68-67 decision against San Jose State in the middle of January. Last weekend, Hawaii hosted Nevada and failed to hold off the Wolf Pack in a 66-60 final.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Bulldogs own a 24-16 advantage, thanks in part to a 78-64 win on the mainland last month.
Playing yet again without Paul George, Fresno State had an awful effort against the Broncos last weekend as it shot just 1-of-15 behind the three- point line and had 25 turnovers. Jerry Brown ended up as the only double-digit scorer for the squad with his 10 points, adding seven rebounds off the bench as the squad finished the contest at 40.7 percent from the field. Sylvester Seay and Greg Smith accounted for nine points apiece and a combined 15 boards, but that also logged 10 turnovers between them as well. The loss of George means this group has to make up for 17.0 ppg and 7.3 rpg, not to mention the passing (63 assists) that he brought to the game and his quick hands (51 steals) at the defensive end of the floor. Trying to fill in the gaps is Seay with his 15.5 ppg and 5.7 rpg and Smith who brings with him 12.0 ppg and 6.7 rpg, while Steven Shepp (6.1 ppg) handles passing duties with his 109 assists through 23 games.
Winning on the road has never been easy for the Warriors, and they showed again why that's the case last weekend as they allowed a winnable game to slip away in Reno. While Hawaii was hitting a mere 8-of-17 chances at the free- throw line, the Wolf Pack was knocking down 10 straight at the stripe in the final minutes of the six-point decision. Roderick Flemings posted 17 points, Brandon Adams 13 and nine boards and Hiram Thompson 10 points in the losing cause. Making things even more difficult tonight out on the island, the Warriors are now starting life without Dwain Williams who has been suspended indefinitely due to a violation of team rules. Even though he appeared in just 14 games, Williams was the second-leading scorer for the squad with his 14.0 ppg, trailing only Flemings with his 15.1 ppg. In the three conference games in which Williams appeared, he shot a mere 21.9 percent from the floor, which is one of the reasons why Hawaii is down to 40.8 percent from the field in those contests and is scoring a mere 62.6 ppg against WAC foes thus far.
Even though the Bulldogs are down a man, their best man, they still have more talent than Hawaii at the moment and should be able to pull off the series sweep of the Warriors.
