GAME NOTES: The Manhattan Jaspers shoot for back-to-back wins for the first time since late November as they hit the hardwood against the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference battle at Draddy Gym.
The Jaspers finally put a seven-game slide to rest on Friday night as they topped a woeful Marist program with a 72-47 victory at home. It was just the third win in 13 tries against the rest of the MAAC and the second win overall since just before Christmas.
As for the Greyhounds, they too came up winners two nights ago as they recorded a minor 80-73 upset of the Rider Broncs on the road. The victory snapped a two-game slide and moved the squad to 4-9 in league action.
In a series that dates back to the 1913-14 campaign, Manhattan owns a 30-16 edge over the Greyhounds entering today's battle. Loyola had won three in a row in the series before the Jaspers posted a 72-65 victory in the most recent affair last season. These two squads will close out the regular season in Maryland at the end of the month.
Shane Walker came up with a double-double consisting of 12 points and a game- high 12 rebounds as the Greyhounds posted the seven-point road win two nights ago. The Greyhounds were led in scoring by Brett Harvey with 15 points, J'hared Hall added 14 off the bench and Brian Rudolph and Robert Olson kicked in 12 and 10 points, respectively. Loyola converted not only 54 percent from the field, but also 10-of-18 behind the three-point line in order to overcome 18 turnovers on the night. Through 23 games, Harvey leads the program in scoring with his 13.9 ppg, even though he is making just 40.9 percent of his field goal chances. Walker accounts for 8.4 ppg and a team-best 6.6 rpg, while his defense in the middle has produced 35 blocked shots and has helped to limit the opposition to just 39.7 percent accuracy from the floor thus far.
Darryl Crawford scored a game-high 20 points as he led the Jaspers to the 25- point win over the Marist Red Foxes two nights ago at home. Also scoring in double figures for the Jaspers were Rico Pickett and George Beamon with 13 points apiece while Kevin Laue, who is believed to be the only Division I player on scholarship with only one hand, also knocked down a hook shot in the final minutes for the home team. Playing just under 33 minutes per game this season, Pickett has been a dominate force on offense for the Jaspers with his 17.4 ppg, but for someone who handles the ball as much as he does, Pickett could certainly do better than a mere 20 assists. Crawford checks in with another 14.7 ppg and is credited with nearly six rebounds per game to pace the program in that department, but still Manhattan is getting beaten on the glass by almost four rebounds per game right now.
Even though Manhattan is far from the once dominating program it was just a few years ago, having both Crawford and Pickett carrying the offense and playing at home today should be more than enough to record the league victory.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
