GAME NOTES: A Big Sky Conference clash is on the docket this afternoon in Greeley, as the Northern Colorado Bears play host to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.
The Lumberjacks have been idle since January 30th. They carried a four-game win streak into that clash with Montana, but the result was a lopsided 84-64 loss to the Grizzlies. NAU is now 11-10 overall, including 5-5 in Big Sky action, and today is the first of what will be three straight road games for the club.
Northern Colorado hasn't played since last Sunday when it recorded a 74-68 decision over Montana State. The Bears have now won three of their last four games to improve to 18-5 overall, including 7-3 in league play. They have been tremendous at home, winning eight of their nine tilts in Greeley.
The Bears beat the Lumberjacks by a 75-66 final last month, but NAU still owns a 6-4 series lead.
Northern Arizona struggled mightily at the defensive end against Montana, as the Grizzlies were able to shoot 59.6 percent from the floor. The Lumberjacks were outscored 18-11 from the foul line and outrebounded by a 30-25 margin. Cameron Jones scored 22 points for NAU, and DeAngelo Jones added 14 points. As for Josh Lepley, he rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers with 13 points. Jones is the only player on the roster who has started all 21 games this season, and he is easily to club's top scorer with 18.6 ppg on the strength of 50.7 percent shooting from the field. NAU is generating 70.1 ppg as a team, and it is allowing 70.9 ppg to opponents.
Against Montana State last time out, Northern Colorado put forth a sensational 29-of-33 effort from the foul line, outscoring the Bobcats by 18 points at the charity stripe. Five players reached double figures in scoring in the victory, Will Figures posted 20 points on the strength of a 10-of-10 showing from the foul line. Neal Kingman added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Mike Proctor added 12 points. Devon Beitzel and Chris Kaba both added 11 points for Northern Colorado, which is averaging 74.8 ppg while allowing 67.3 ppg. Figures is generating 15.9 ppg as the squad's top scorer, and Beitzel contributes 14.5 ppg on 43.7 percent shooting from three-point range.
Northern Colorado is tremendous at home and will knock off Northern Arizona today in what should be a close game throughout.
