GAME NOTES: The Illinois-Chicago Flames will try to solve their road woes tonight, as they tangle with the Valparaiso Crusaders in Horizon League action at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
The Flames finally found their way back into the win column this past weekend, notching a 74-68 victory over Youngstown State. It was the teams's first victory since December 31st, as UIC snapped a nine-game losing streak. Unfortunately, the Flames now must head back out to the road, where they are winless at 0-11.
As for Valpo, it continues to play well and picked up a 74-70 victory over Detroit on Saturday. The win was the team's sixth in the past eight games, improving the Crusaders to 12-13 overall and 7-6 within the conference.
In regard to the all-time series, UIC holds a 29-10 advantage over Valpo. However, the Crusaders scored a 64-58 win in the first encounter of the season.
The Ramblers forced 18 turnovers and held YSU to a sub par 38.2 percent shooting effort from the floor, as they recorded a 74-68 win on Saturday. UIC did a nice job at the foul line to stay ahead, converting on 23-of-31 chances. Zavion Neely led the way with a 23-point performance, while Robo Kreps logged 20 points and four steals. Kreps currently leads the squad in scoring at 14.3 ppg, though he is shooting only 33.7 percent from the floor. Neely is next in order at 12.3 ppg and Jeremy Buttell adds 11.5 ppg and a team-high 7.1 rpg to the rotation.
Valpo made good on 44.4 percent of its field-goal chances compared to just a 35.4 percent showing by Detroit, as it picked up a 74-70 win over the weekend. The Crusaders were also effective at the foul line, where they went 19-of-22 for the game. Brandon Wood paced Valpo with 18 points and three steals, while Michael Rogers had 13 points. On the campaign, Wood is averaging a solid 18.6 ppg to lead Valpo and he is also snaring 5.0 rpg and shooting 39.7 percent from behind the arc. Cory Johnson tacks on 15.6 ppg and a team-high 6.0 rpg for the Crusaders, while Brandon McPherson chips in with 11.5 ppg on the strength of 45.5 percent shooting from downtown.
The Crusaders are really playing well right now and they should have no trouble continuing that trend tonight against a UIC squad that has yet to win on the road.
