GAME NOTES: Currently leading the West Division of the Mid-American Conference, the Central Michigan Chippewas host the Akron Zips this evening in Mt. Pleasant.
The last time the Zips were on the floor the team grabbed a 75-70 overtime victory over Ball State. It was the fourth win in the last five games for Akron, which is 7-3 in league play.
The Chippewas saw their two-game winning streak come to an end with a 68-63 setback to Kent State on Saturday. Despite suffering a loss, the Chippewas still sit on top of the West Division with a 6-3 ledger.
Akron has won nine of the last 10 matchups against Central Michigan and now own a comfortable 24-13 edge in the all-time series.
Akron needed overtime the last time the team took the floor, but eventually the Zips earned a five-point victory over Ball State. Akron only shot 35.8 percent from the field in the matchup, but connected on 18-of-23 attempts from the foul line and won the battle on the glass by a 43-38 margin. Anthony Hitchens led the way in the win with 17 points and five assists, while Nikola Cvetinovic posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jimmy Conyers also tallied a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Brett McKnight chipped in 12 points as well. On the season however, the team has been nothing more than mediocre, and comes into this matchup netting 70.6 ppg. The only player averaging double figures is Brett McKnight, who is netting 10.2 ppg.
Producing at the offensive end of the floor has been a problem for Central Michigan, which is currently netting just 64.2 ppg. Robbie Harman and Jordan Bitzer have been the only real scoring threats on the floor for CMU, as both players are posting 13.7 ppg, while Harman is dishing out 3.1 apg, and Bitzer is grabbing 5.1 rpg. The offensive woes for Central Michigan continued in its recent loss to Kent State, as the Chippewas finished with just 63 points, despite shooting just 48.9 percent from the field. The Chippewas hurt themselves in other areas, finishing just 8-of-27 from behind the arc, and 9- of-14 from the foul line. Bitzer led the way in the loss with 19 points, while Jalin Thomas added 12 points, and Antonio Weary posted 10.
The Chippewas have been unable to get anything going offensively, and considering how solid the Zips have been at the defensive end of the floor, look for Akron to come away with the victory.
