GAME NOTES: The Saint Joseph's Hawks bring their three-game homestand to a close tonight, as they host the Saint Louis Billikens in Atlantic 10 play at Hagan Arena.
After falling to Richmond to open their current homestand, the Hawks were able to rebound with a 78-71 victory over St. Bonaventure on Sunday. The win put a stop to a three-game slide and improved SJU to 9-14 overall and 3-6 in-conference.
As for the Billikens, they emerged with their second road win on Saturday, nipping La Salle, 68-65. It was the second win in a row for SLU, which is now 15-8 overall and 5-3 within the conference.
As for the all-time series, SLU took a 3-2 lead following a 73-71 victory in last season's meeting.
Kwamain Mitchell made four free throws in the final minute to help SLU escape La Salle with a 68-65 win on Saturday. Mitchell finished with 25 points for the Billikens, who hit 19 free throws in the bout. Willie Reed logged 21 points and eight boards in the win, while Cody Ellis had 14 points. Mitchell though, is the team's leading scorer on the season at 16.2 ppg and he also has 35 steals to his name. Reed tacks on 12.4 ppg and a team-best 8.2 rpg, while Ellis turns in 11.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg. As a team, the Billikens have thrived on defense, holding foes to 59.4 ppg and 38.8 percent shooting from the field.
The Hawks forced 23 turnovers and scored 24 points off those mishaps in a 78-71 win over SBU over the weekend. SJU shot 46.0 percent from the floor as well as holding a 29-18 advantage in free-throw points. Darrin Govens led the charge with 22 points and three steals, while Idris Hilliard and Garrett Williamson posted 19 and 16 points, respectively. For the season, Govens paces the Hawks in scoring at 13.3 ppg and he is a 35.0 percent three-point shooter. Williamson delivers 11.2 ppg and a team-high 3.9 apg for SJU, while Hilliard contributes 11.0 ppg and 5.8 rpg.
SLU is having a more successful campaign, but the Hawks have been effective at home and look for them come out on top in a minor surprise tonight.
