GAME NOTES: In a rematch of last season's Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title game, the George Mason Patriots face the Virginia Commonwealth Rams in Fairfax tonight.
After winning seven straight games and soaring to the top of the CAA standings, the Patriots have suffered back-to-back defeats to fall into a second place tie at 10-3. The most recent of the team's setbacks came on Saturday, a 73-60 result at Drexel. On a positive note, GMU now returns back home, where it has won 17 straight games against league foes.
As for VCU, it has really come on strong of late, winning four straight and eight of its past nine outings. The team defeated Old Dominion, 70-58, on Saturday to move within a game of second place at 9-4. The Rams are also a solid 17-5 overall and that includes a 5-4 mark on the road.
The Rams own a 27-15 advantage in the all-time series with GMU and VCU captured a 71-50 decision in the CAA Tournament championship game last season.
VCU forced twice as many turnovers as it committed on the way to a 70-58 victory over ODU this past weekend. The Rams scored 17 points off 16 ODU giveaways, while VCU committed only eight turnovers. Bradford Burgess tallied 16 points and six boards to lead the way, while Larry Sanders notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The double-double was the seventh of the season for Sanders, who tops the roster in both scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.0 rpg). Joey Rodriguez tacks on 11.5 ppg, to go along with a team-high 6.1 apg, while Burgess adds 10.8 ppg and 5.0 rpg.
Free-throw shooting made the difference, as GMU went a dismal 11-of-24 at the line compared to a 25-of-31 effort by Drexel in a 73-60 setback over the weekend. Mike Morrison and Cam Long each had 17 points in the losing cause, while Ryan Pearson pitched in with 12 points and nine boards. On the season, Long is the squad's leading scorer at 12.3 ppg and he also has a team-high 33 steals to his credit. Pearson has provided a nice complement to Long and he checks in with 12.1 ppg and a team-high 7.0 rpg.
This is a big game for each club, as they are both very much in the running for the CAA title. Go with the Patriots, as they are tough at home and looking for payback after losing out in last season's title game.
