GAME NOTES: Mid-American Conference play will take place this evening when the Ohio University Bobcats host the Western Michigan Broncos at the Convocation Center.
The Broncos head into this game fresh off a thrilling, 65-64 victory over Bowling Green. It was the second win in the last three games for Western Michigan, which is now 5-5 in league action.
The Bobcats suffered a 70-61 setback to Eastern Michigan the last time they were on the floor. It was the second loss in the last three contest for Ohio, which is a mere 3-6 in MAC action.
The Bobcats have won five of the last seven games against Western Michigan, and now own a slim 61-58 edge over the Broncos.
The Broncos were not overwhelming last time out, but the team did enough to slip past Bowling Green. Once again the team was led by David Kool, who scored 23 points for Western Michigan, which as a whole shot 45.5 percent from the floor. Kool has been the top player on the floor throughout the season for WMU, as the guard is leading the team with 21.1 ppg. Kool has also dished out 60 assists for Western Michigan, and is currently leading the team with 39 steals. Martelle McLemore is the only other player netting double figures, as the forward is posting 11.4 ppg, to go along with 5.7 rpg. As a whole however, the team has been nothing more than mediocre as Western Michigan is producing just 69.4 ppg.
The Bobcats were ineffective the last time they were on the floor, as the team scored just 61 points, behind a pedestrian 40.0 percent shooting effort. Ohio finished just 8-of-21 from long range, and made just 9-of-13 attempts from the foul line. Armon Bassett led the way in the loss with 19 points, while D.J. Cooper posted 15 points. Reggie Keely made a solid contribution with 11 points, and also grabbed eight rebounds. Bassett and Cooper have been the top two players on the floor for Ohio, as Bassett is pacing the team with 13.8 ppg, while Cooper is contributing 13.3 ppg, to go along with 128 assists. On the season the Bobcats have been mediocre offensively, and come into this matchup averaging 73.0 ppg.
If the Bobcats can cool down Kool, then they should have an excellent chance of grabbing an important league win at home.
