GAME NOTES: The 24th-ranked Baylor Bears invade Lincoln tonight to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a Big 12 affair at the Devaney Center.
The Bears enter the game on a down note, as they were upended, 78-71, at Texas A&M on Saturday. The loss put an end to a short, two-game win streak and dropped Baylor to just 1-3 on the road in Big 12 play. Still, the Bears are a healthy 17-5 overall and a level 4-4 within the conference.
As for the Huskers, this is their third straight game against a Top 25 opponent following losses to Kansas State (76-57) and Kansas (75-64) last week. Nebraska has now dropped seven of its eight league outings, as it remains in the cellar of the Big 12.
Nebraska leads the head-to-head series with Baylor, 12-8, but the Bears defeated the Huskers, 65-49, in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament a season ago.
The Bears were outscored at the foul line, 28-14, and that was the difference in a 78-71 loss at Texas A&M over the weekend. Baylor also lost the battle on the boards, 36-26, including a 15-10 difference on the offensive glass. LaceDarius Dunn paced the team in defeat with 23 points and seven boards, while Ekpe Udoh had 19 points and four boards. On the season, Dunn is averaging 18.7 ppg to lead Baylor and he is deadly from long range, hitting at a 41.2 percent rate. Tweety Carter, a 39.8 percent three-point shooter, checks in with 16.7 ppg and he has been in charge of running the show, dishing out a team-best 6.3 apg. Udoh averages a double-double with 14.1 ppg and a team-high 10.4 rpg for the Bears and he also has 91 blocks to his credit.
The Huskers gave top-ranked Kansas all it could handle on Saturday, but their 19 turnovers were too much to overcome in a 75-64 setback. The giveaways resulted in 21 points for Kansas, and Nebraska didn't help matters with just an 8-of-15 effort at the foul line. Brian Jorge Diaz guided the squad in the loss with 20 points and nine boards, while Ryan Anderson had 12 points on 4- of-5 three-pointers. Anderson is the only player on the roster scoring in double figures for the season at 10.7 ppg. He also leads the Huskers in rebounding (4.8 rpg) as well as steals (43).
Baylor has been vulnerable on the road, but its trio of double-digit scorers should be able to lead the Bears past the last-place Huskers tonight.
